Time to "Unplug" and Enjoy Our Parks & Trails

The Woodstock Parks and Recreation Department is on the move, finding new and unique ways to incorporate health and fitness into our citizen’s daily lifestyle. Over the past few years, we have focused on expanding our outdoor fitness opportunities to fill this need.

With its one-of-a-kind pirate ship theme, the Dupree Park Playground was constructed with our youngest residents in mind. Climb, swing and steer the ship from the upper level of the playground and then slide your way to more fun on the lower tier. While your kids see it as a jolly good time, it’s a great way to set the pace for a lifestyle of outdoor enjoyment.

If your family is up for a little adventure, the Dupree Park Family Mountain Bike Trail will fit the bill. Rated as Easy, the three main loops are beginner friendly with a wide, smooth trail tread. The grades are very low, and the trails are meant to be fun at slower speeds. Also, featuring a short bike skills trail which provides technical features designed to teach balance control and bike handling. These are excellent trails for kids and for novice off-road riders as well as those getting back on the bike after a long hiatus. The three main loops are named “Lions”, “Tigers” and “Bears”. The skills area is named “Oh my!”

The newest amenity at Dupree Park has been well received: The Dupree Park Fitness Trail is the newest section of the Greenprints Trail System. The Fitness Trail is a 1/3 mile long, 8-foot wide asphalt trail that encircles the five acre greenspace on the northwest corner of the park. The trail runs along the outer edge of the greenspace allowing the area to also be utilized for soccer in the fall and other events and programs throughout the year.

We’re anticipating even more enthusiasm over the Fitness Trail once the new Outdoor Fitness Station is complete (scheduled for late May). This addition will include 11 exercise stations including: a bench press station, squat, leg curl / leg extension, triceps press, chest press, sit-up benches, pull-up / dips, and plyometric boxes. The Fitness Station will also include three handicap / wheelchair accessible pieces of equipment including a vertical press, chest press and butterfly machine. The equipment is adjustable with resistance ranging from easy to more advanced higher tension.

Adventure seekers from both near and far, adore Olde Rope Mill Park for its mountain bike trails and the ability to canoe and kayak on Little River. The park is home to the Taylor Randhal Memorial Mountain Bike Trail that has 14 miles of connecting trails that twist through nearly 100 acres of public park land. A pedestrian/ bike bridge connects the south side of Little River to the north side where you can see the remnants of an 1800’s Rope Mill.

Take a hike, bike or stroll along the 1.5 mile Noonday Creek Trail. With trail heads in three locations, the trail is easily accessed from Downtown Woodstock at Market Street, Highway 92 and Woofstock Park, located at 150 Dupree Road.

“Woodstock residents are extremely active — from walking, jogging and biking our trails to canoeing and kayaking; our citizens want to be active and enjoy what the City has to offer in our parks. We encourage our residents to get unplugged and spend quality family time outdoors.” adds Preston Pooser, Parks and Recreation Director.
