Grant Allows Meals on Wheels to Provide Pet Food

According to Meals on Wheels America, seniors with pets are less likely to exhibit depression, report feelings of loneliness or experience illness. However, owning a pet can become a financial burden to seniors on a fixed income. Often, a devoted animal lover will feed their hungry pet before they feed themselves.

Enter Meals on Wheels Loves Pets a grant program from Meals on Wheels America aimed to help ease the cost of pet ownership and keep pets and seniors together. Senior Services North Fulton, a nonprofit that has been supporting older adults in the north Fulton community since 1991, was honored to receive a $2,500 grant from Meals on Wheels America to help grow this important program.

Volunteers meet the first Friday of every month at the Senior Services North Fulton office in Alpharetta to sort 30 days worth of pet food and deliver it to clients. Michelle Williams is the volunteer program manager and oversees the Meals on Wheels for Pets program. We started the program in 2013 and currently deliver food to 74 pets, said Williams. These pets are the only family some of our clients have. Without the support of this program, many of these animals would end up in local shelters.
