RTMS Academic Bowl The River Trail Middle School academic bowl team recently competed in the Collins Hill Academic High School Tournament. Only two middle school teams competed with the RTMS team placing third overall. The team headed to Dallas, TX, in May, to compete in the Middle School National Championship Tournament.
Musical Keyboard Lab for Northwood A recently installed musical keyboard lab at Northwood Elementary School is bringing the joy of music to all students. Funded by the Northwood Elementary Foundation, the keyboard lab consists of thirty (30) keyboards, stands and headphones. Students from grades K through 5th use the keyboard lab as part of their music instruction. Head of Music and Chorus at Northwood Elementary, Kimberly Dahl, approached the Northwood Foundation with a special request to have the keyboard lab funded and installed. Kim believes that the keyboards provide students with an opportunity to individualize their musical skills and musicianship. Furthermore, says Kim, The students can move at their own pace and are so proud of their accomplishments.
U13 Roswell Santos Girls Win Gold Athena A U13 Roswell Santos Girls Blue team led by Coach Mark Lomas won their Gold II Division at the Red Diamond Vulcan Cup Tournament in Birmingham, Alabama against other top competitors in the Athena A bracket from surrounding states including Georgia. The Santos team rendered their opponents scoreless with their Goalie, Kristin Liquori, battling to the end in the championship game further denying their opponents PK attempts.
International Night was celebrated at Creek View Many countries were represented during the Parade of Nations including; Argentina, Austria, Brazil, Czech Republic, China, Colombia, Egypt, Germany, India, Iran, Israel, Latvia, Mexico, Nicaragua, Puerto Rico, Peru, South Africa, and Sri Lanka. This was a festive evening with many countries showcasing their traditions through costumes, song, dance and food.
Sweet Apple Raises Funds Sweet Apple Elementary in Roswell recently held its first Color Me Fun Run, which raised over $4,300 for Relay for Life and its fight against cancer. Almost 500 participants from the Sweet Apple community completed a one-mile course during which they were doused with colored powder. Sweet Apple Elementary in Roswell also raised $23,656 for the American Heart Associations Jump Rope for Heart.
Haynes Bridge Students Win Awards Callie Rigsbee, 8th grade student at Haynes Bridge Middle School recently received a first place award in the Sons of the American Revolution brochure contest for Middle School students. Callie produced a brochure on the national theme Foundational Documents. Her entry was sponsored by the Piedmont Chapter that meets in Roswell. Callie received a check for $50 for her school entry along with a certificate. Justin Wright was the first runner up, receiving a check for $25 and a certificate. School entries were made under the encouragement of their teacher, Dani-Sue Boldus for 8th grade Social Studies. Students were encouraged through their research to exhibit knowledge and understanding of American history using any of the five foundational documents as the brochure theme. The Sons of the American Revolution is a national patriotic, historical and educational society whose members are direct descendents of the patriots who earned our independence. IHS Attend Enrichment Program For the second consecutive year, Independence High School students attended the Hewlett-Packard Annual Student Enrichment Event at HP headquarters in Alpharetta. The 16 IHS students began their day at a continental breakfast meet and greet and learned about different career opportunities at Hewlett-Packard. They were given a tour of the Graphics Center, led by Mr. James Cooper and a demonstration of HP SPROUT by Ms. Tammie Trinh. HP SPROUT is a Windows 8 desktop. But its also a dual-screen creative console with its own projector, a giant touch-enabled screen and a 3D-capable scanner. The product is the result of a partnership between HP, Microsoft, Intel and 3M. After a catered lunch break, the students wrapped up their visit with a tour of the Next Gen Data Center, led by Ms. Deborah Thornton.
Walker Students Present Projects Easton Howard of Roswell is one of seven members of The Walker Schools Guided Scientific Research class who have been invited to present their research at the 40th annual Georgia Junior Science and Humanities Symposium (GJSHS). These seven students are among only 50 students in the state of Georgia invited to do so. At the GJSHS, students present the results of their original scientific, engineering, or mathematics research to judges and peer and compete for scholarships and other awards. This years Walker School students and their official project titles are: Brittain Pinkston-Woodstock: Effects of Antibiotic Use on Nasal Microbiota and Allergies. Easton Howard- Roswell: Feasibility of Airborne Fungi DNA Barcoding in a School Setting. Sarah Condon-Marietta: Outbreak Simulation with Hand Hygiene Education Intervention. Reilly Johnson-Marietta: Effects of Social Determinants on the Self-Efficacy of LGBT Youth. Courtney Lewis-Kennesaw: TGF- Expression in Prostate Cancer: A Case-Control Study. Leigh Norsworthy-Marietta: Filaggrin Polymorphisms and Self-reported Eczema Severity. Chantal Sharp-Marietta: S. pyogenes Infection and Interleukin 1-Beta 31-T/C Polymorphism.
Independence High School Recent Graduation The final members of the Class of 2014 were honored in January at Independence High School during a day dedicated to celebrating their accomplishments. Mrs. Tabatha Taylor, Principal, hosted the annual Graduates Breakfast, offering graduating seniors their last opportunity to mingle with friends, faculty and staff members before leaving their high school days behind. The Commencement Ceremony was held in the Auditorium of the Milton Center and was attended by family, friends and honored guests. Independence HS Teacher of the Year, Ms. Linda Legros, was the featured speaker and Ms. Margaret Pupillo, Area Superintendent for the Northwest Learning Community, represented Fulton County Schools in the certification of the graduates. Principal Taylor awarded the diplomas and the special day was concluded with a reception for the graduates and their supporters.
Georgias Seven Wonders Megan Feldman Queen is a 5th grade teacher at Roswell North Elementary. Her students have been working collaboratively with the Seven Wonders organization to start a national campaign to discover Georgias Seven Wonders. Over the first semester of school, the students selected, researched, and organized eighteen different nominees for this campaign. They range from local landmarks such as Stone Mountain to the Okefenokee Swamp. The goal for this project is to raise awareness about all the remarkable places here in the great state of Georgia.
