Chamber Recognizes Winners of Mayors Recycling Challenge The Cherokee County Chamber of Commerce Going Green Committee has concluded their 4th Mayors Recycling Challenge event, which challenged cities in Cherokee County to encourage their residents to recycle during the months of June and July. The winning city for total pounds recycled, winning city for most pounds collected per capita and the winning city for highest percentage increase over last year were announced during the Chambers September Good Morning Cherokee breakfast meeting. North Metro Waste and Waste Management partnered with the Chamber on this event. The City of Woodstock collected the most recycling, which totaled 460,146 pounds, followed by City of Canton 260,584 pounds, Ball Ground 85,260 pounds, Waleska 77,860 pounds and Holly Springs 46,780 pounds. The combined total collected by all the cities was 930,630 pounds, which is a fifteen percent increase over last year. The City of Waleska, for the fourth consecutive year, collected the most recycling per capita with 111.39 pounds per resident, as determined based on 2013 U.S. Census population estimates. Additional per capita totals included City of Ball Ground 57.53 pounds/resident, City of Woodstock 17.11 pounds/resident, City of Canton 10.78 pounds/resident and City of Holly Springs 4.78 pounds/resident. The City of Canton was recognized for having the highest percentage increase of collected recyclables over the previous year. This year, the city collected 260,584 pounds, which is a 64% increase over last year. This is the first year this award was presented. The mission of the Chambers Going Green initiative is to encourage the community to implement green practices that conserve community resources, while helping businesses thrive. Cobb EMC Ranked One of Georgias Most Affordable Electric Providers Cobb EMC residential summer bills dropped 7.5 percent since last year for an average household that uses 1000 kilowatt hours, according to the Georgia Public Service Commissions Summer Residential Rate Survey. Were extremely proud that our rates rank 4th lowest among all 94 providers in the state, said Chip Nelson, President and CEO of Cobb EMC. These rankings reaffirm our commitment to safely delivering reliable, competitively priced electricity and to bring greater savings and overall value to our members. According to the 2015 Georgia PSC summer survey, Cobb EMC members save approximately $25 dollars per month on their summer bills compared to the average electric utility customer. The co-op also passed along three credits in the months of June, July and August to bring overall savings and help lower summer bills for members. In June, a 5-mill credit in the Wholesale Power Adjustment (WPA) was applied, followed by a 9-mill credit in the WPA for the month of July and a 7-mill credit in August. The Georgia PSC summer survey ranks electric providers on rates in effect for the month of July, based on total electric bill amounts of 500, 1000, 1500 and 2000 kWh. Donations to SRLS The Cherokee County Chamber of Commerce Education Committee in partnership with Cobb EMC recognized retiring educators from the Cherokee County School District by donating funds to the Sequoyah Regional Library System. The funds will be used to purchase books for all five library branches located around the county. The books will include a label recognizing all faculty, staff and administrators who retired during the 2014-2015 school year. Each retiree will receive notification that a book is being donated in their honor.
