North Fulton Happy Campers Choosing the Right Camp for Your Child By Amy Rickman and Jenny Simpson LETS GOI dont want to miss anything at summer camp today! What parent hasnt dreamed of hearing those magical words each morning, knowing their child is having fun? Great summer camp experiences offer kids a chance to explore, develop new skills, forge friendships, and create awesome memories. If your goal is to have a happy camper this year, now is the time to start planning summer adventures. Here are some ways to help you be successful in that journey. NARROW THE FIELDWith so many types of camps to choose from, where does a parent start the quest? Camp selections today are varied, unique and available to meet almost every area of interest. Are you looking for sleepaway or day camp? Does your child prefer an emphasis on athletics or arts? For example, what about an exploration in movie making or Minecrafting? If it can be taught, theres probably a camp for it! Narrowing the field of options can be daunting, so start simple. Before you even begin the search, take a moment to discuss the idea of camp with your child. What would she like to discover this summer? Is he better suited to a specialty camp or one with variety? Will your child thrive in trying something new or excel in further developing a talent? Where are they most comfortable or most challenged? Understanding your childs interests and personality is the number one key to finding the right summer program match. RESEARCH YOUR OPTIONSYour camper has provided input, and now its time to incorporate your familys needs. Consider overall factors that will affect your selection, and use this information to tailor your options to research. If you have multiple campers with individual interests, look for camps that offer diverse choices for different ages. If cost is crucial, ask about scholarship opportunities, volume savings, early bird specials or family discounts. If variety is important, search for single-day, multi-day or specialty camps to weave into the summer schedule. And if you prefer to stay local, check out online parent blogs. Most sites produce a summer camp guide, a handy collection of programs and camp contacts in your community. Legwork done! Be creative in gathering information about camps. Browse for summer programs offered by local recreation departments, youth service agencies, churches, sports associations, community colleges, museums, libraries or even non-traditional camp businesses. And remember, one of the best resources available to parents is another parent who has been through this before. Talk to friends whose children enjoyed their camp experience, and ask for recommendations. ASK RELEVANT QUESTIONSOnce you have a few good choices, call or visit the camps to inquire about their philosophy, safety procedures, communication plan, staff training and how they manage behavior. Discuss individual needs for your child and how these might be addressed. Ask relevant questions to ease your concerns as a parent. Heres a quick checklist of questions to consider: How are staff selected, screened and trained? What is the staffs educational background and experience? What is the camper to counselor ratio? How are children organized into groups? How does the camp manage behavior or handle conflicts? What forms of parent communication are utilized? What are the health and safety policies? What is included? (field trips, swimming, supplies, meals, etc.) What is a sample daily schedule? TIME TO CHOOSECamp is a place for your child to grow, explore, play and have fun with friends! Remember to plan early, do the right research, and make a match that best suits your childs interests and needs. And this summer, enjoy your HAPPY CAMPER! Amy Rickman is the marketing/accreditation coordinator and Jenny Simpson is the Wills Park Camp Supervisor for the City of Alpharetta Recreation and Parks. Alpharetta.Ga.us
Summit Financial Solutions By Kathleen Boehmig Photos courtesy of PhotoJack.net The Wisdom to Reach Your Potential Summit Financial Solutions, located in the Towne Lake area, serves Woodstock, Kennesaw, Acworth, Canton and surrounding areas and offers a great variety of financial services, including small business start-up, consulting, accounting, planning and support, tax preparation and planning, financial services and payroll services. Summits President and Executive Tax Director, Joseph Parker, entered the field of finance in an unusual way: he wanted to help others avoid the mistakes he made in his first business when, in his twenties and in spite of using an accountant to keep him on track, he suddenly found himself owing a substantial amount of income tax to the IRS. People sometimes dont realize that taxes are their greatest expense in life, he says; so many fail to plan adequately to stay on top of them. These days, a lot of small business owners and people in the middle class are in a real crunch, particularly because of healthcare costs. Between that expense and taxes, and the continually changing and evolving rules and regulations in both areas, people really need our help. We have a staff of highly qualified and certified professionals, who are dedicated to analyzing and offering appropriate solutions for your financial needs, Mr. Parker says. We do this in an efficient and cost effective manner, while maintaining the highest ethical standards. We set an agenda customized to each client before he arrives. Frequently, the client leaves the initial meeting with homework, or suggested tasks to provide us with further information, so we can better assess his unique position and structure our solution to perfectly serve his needs. Summits professionals stay up to date on evolving tax strategies, maintaining membership in the National Association of Tax Professionals and the National Association of Enrolled Agents. Summit was named a winner two years in a row for the Best of Life Awards. The world is full of tax preparers who can put the right numbers, on the right forms, by the right deadlines, Mr. Parker says; but when was the last time your tax preparer came to you and said, Heres an idea I think will save you money? At Summit Financial Solutions, we believe proactive tax planning scouring your income and expenses for every available deduction, credit, loophole and opportunity, without aggressive strategies, gray areas or red flags is the key to keeping more of what you make. We are able to uniquely serve our clients by the combined experience our professionals bring to the table in the areas of tax planning, strategic business planning and personal financial services. Having these services under one roof allows us to operate without the conflicts and hierarchies present in many larger firms, thus we are able to focus on offering the best custom solutions one client at a time. The Six Most OverlookedTax Deductions Who among us wants to pay the IRS more taxes than we have to? While few may raise their hands, Americans regularly overpay because they fail to take tax deductions for which they are eligible. Lets take a quick look at the six most overlooked opportunities to manage your tax bill. Reinvested Dividends: When your mutual fund pays you a dividend or capital gains distribution, that income is a taxable event (unless the fund is held in a tax-deferred account, like an IRA). If youre like most fund owners, you reinvest these payments in additional shares of the fund. The tax trap lurks when you sell your mutual fund. If you fail to add the reinvested amounts back into the investments cost basis, it can result in double taxation of those dividends. Job Hunting Costs: A tough job market may mean you are looking far and wide for employment. The costs of that search transportation, food and lodging for overnight stays, cab fares, personal car use and even printing resumesmay be considered tax-deductible expenses, provided the search is not for your first job. Out-of-Pocket Charity: Its not just cash donations that are deductible. If you donate goods or use your personal car for charitable work, these are potential tax deductions. Just be sure to get a receipt for any amount over $250. State Taxes: Did you owe state taxes at the time of the filing of your previous years tax returns? If you did, dont forget to include this payment as a tax deduction on your current years tax return. Medicare Premiums: If you are self-employed (and not covered by an employer plan or your spouses plan), you may be eligible to deduct premiums paid for Medicare Parts B and D, Medigap insurance and Medicare Advantage Plan. This deduction is available regardless of whether you itemize deductions or not. Income in Respect of a Decedent: If youve inherited an IRA or pension, you may be able to deduct any estate tax paid by the IRA owner from the taxes due on the withdrawals you take from the inherited account. What They Do Jyl Craven Hair Design serves guests of all ages. Designing hairstyles that accentuate your personality, benefit your lifestyle and compliment your natural features is something the professionals at the salon do every day. Over the past few years, the salon has been caring for a growing number of women challenged with hair loss. Women with fine or thinning hair who want added volume and density have many options at the salon, says Jyl. By artfully crafting haircuts, the stylists can give guests added body, density and strength. In addition, dimensional color can be used to give the illusion of thicker hair. Jyl Craven Hair Design also carries an exclusive line of professional products that specifically target thinning hair. Challenged with FINE or THINNING Hair? Nearly 30 million women in the U.S. experience hair loss, and 50% of women experience female pattern hair loss by age 50. The reasons for hair loss may include an imbalance of hormones, medications, thyroid problems, menopause, stress or genetic conditions. But regardless of the reason, the emotional struggle is the same. While hair loss is rough for men, it can be even more devastating for women. Men enjoy a certain level of societal acceptance when going bald. But women with thinning hair are subjected to more emotional distress. Many women take pride in their hair, and it can be a strong source of self-confidence for them. As strands fall out, so does their sense of security about themselves, says Jyl. A womans hair plays a huge role in her self-confidence, self-esteem and self-image. Their hair often defines who they are. Imagine the emotional anguish experienced by women with fine, thin hair hair that is insufficient to cover the top and crown of the head, the areas that everyone sees, but no one talks about. Until recently, there were few options for women with severe hair loss. Jyl Craven Hair Design has the Solution Introducing the Evolve Volumizer. The Evolve Volumizer is a nonsurgical, integrated hair replacement system for women experiencing up to 50% hair loss on the crown or top of their head. It consists of 100% human hair, which is lightweight and conforms to the shape of the top and crown of the clients head. It can be worn for up to five weeks before being uninstalled and reinstalled. Each hair on the system is hand-tied to create volume on the top, causing it to lay flat and blend in with the sides of a clients head shape. The system can be cut to your individual style and blow-dried, ironed (curl and flat), dried naturally, braided, tucked behind your ear or put up into a pony or chignon for evening wear. The Evolve Volumizer addresses all of the needs and desires that a woman has for fuller, thicker, denser hair. It produces immediate results and requires no glue, no adhesives, and no chemicals. The salon has eight Evolve Certified Stylists. Having many certified stylists provides the guests ease of scheduling and added assurance there will always be someone available to assist them. The EVOLVE Volumizer doesnt change who you are; it changes how you feel about you. Since 2012, Jyl Craven Hair Design has been helping women both emotionally and physically with the Evolve Volumizer. Heres what a few of the salons Evolve guests are saying: Cheryl from Acworth said, I have had my Evolve system for over a year. Its hard to believe how much of a difference it has made for my self-esteem. The care is easy, just like working with my natural hair, only easier. I cant imagine going without my Evolve. Love it! Jeanne from Woodstock said, I was very self-conscious about my thinning hair until Jyl showed me the Evolve. I was ecstatic when I saw the Evolve. My husband was so happy for me and loves it. Betsy from Canton said, It has changed my life. The Evolve Volumizer is easy to blow dry, easy to style, and some of my friends dont even know I have it on. Its the best thing Ive ever done. Cherokee Children's Dentistry By Kathleen Boehmig Why Family Continues to Define Our Practices Dr. Miles Mazzawi and Dr. Anthea Drew Mazzawi, the first pediatric dentists in Canton, opened Cherokee Childrens Dentistry eight years ago. In 2013, their longtime friend and colleague, Dr. Nirali Procter, joined the practice. Among the three, they have over thirty-five years of dental experience in their warm, welcoming, family-style practice. They take pride in providing comprehensive, preventative and therapeutic oral health care for children of all ages, beginning from infancy, through childhood, adolescence and even late teen years, including patients with special health care needs. We are an exclusive pediatric dental practice, here to treat the unique dental needs of your children, Dr. Miles explains. We are an owner operated practice, and we are focused on offering relationship-based dental care, where we get to know each child and his or her parents. Often in corporate-owned offices, you find a higher volume practice with less doctor/patient interaction. Here, we love getting to know our patients personally. Weve enjoyed watching many of them grow up. He continues, Our commitment is to provide your child with the best possible dental health care, in a warm, caring and FUN environment. We want your children to enjoy coming to the dentist as they learn the importance of oral care and overall dental health. So why did the Mazzawis decide to go into pediatric dentistry? We love children, Dr. Drew answers with a smile. We have twin two-year-old daughters, Anne and Mary. They have already had their first dental cleanings, and they each reacted completely differently to the experiencelike all of our patients. No two kids are alike, even our twins. Every child is unique, with individual needs and preferences, and good pediatric dentists are astute at improvising and tailoring the visit to fit the childs personality. Dr. Miles adds, Some children are frightened of going to the dentist. If they have a negative experience, it can carry over into adulthood and result in years of neglect. Our patients love coming to see us which is a goal we have worked hard to achieve. We spend time paying attention to the childrens individual interests and developing a rapport with each one in order to make their visit a fun experience. This helps the kids develop good oral health care, which usually means they will have great dental habits for life. Dr. Procter, who was a classmate of the Mazzawis during dental school, is a parent of three boys, ages twelve, nine and six. Its a joy, she says, to combine the love for our own children with our love for dentistry, enabling us to help other kids through great dental care. And we can certainly relate to the parents of our patients. Doctors appointments can be stressful, but we aspire to make visits to our office as easy and relaxed as possible. What are some of the ways they make going to the dentist fun? Our office is both cheerful and calming, with murals on the walls and a TV above every chair. We use funny nicknames, like calling cavities sugar bugs, and we are well-versed in things that interest kids, like the most popular movies and TV shows, Dr. Miles says. We find out what each child likes, and tailor our approach to that. We talk to them about their hobbies and extracurricular activities. Everything is geared toward making the child feel comfortable, relaxed and engaged. One of the neat things about pediatric dentistry, Dr. Drew says, is that parents are the third side of the triangle making up the doctor/patient relationship. An apprehensive parent can shape their childs experience. There is nothing scary here! We develop a solid relationship with each parent, so they know we are going to take excellent care of their children. We aim to build trust with our patients, so they will feel comfortable here. That goes for their parents, too! What advice do Drs. Mazzawi and Procter have for parents regarding their childrens oral and dental health care? Cavities in children are on the rise. Toothaches are the number one reason a child visits the school nurse. Ultimately, it is a preventable epidemic! Prevention is the key. Limit your childs sugar intake, and visit the dentist regularly. Stress to your kids the importance of brushing, flossing and cutting back on sugar. Parents can be our biggest advocate. Dr. Miles, Dr. Drew and Dr. Procter are pleased to provide the absolute best, individualized pediatric dental care in Canton, with a mom and pop home-style approach. Dr. Drew says, We look forward to many more years of engaging parents and children, teaching the value of good dental care and winning over many more kids to dentistry. We give 110% of our love and attention to our patients, and we want theirs too! We want to show them how much fun it can be to visit the dentist and practice good oral health care habitsand we want them to leave with a beautiful smile! 205 Waleska Road, Suite 2-B, Canton, GA 30114770-479-1717 l CherokeeChildrensDentistry.comVisit us on Facebook!
Which Senior Care Option is Best for My Loved One? By Julie Senger According to a recent report by the United Health Foundation and American Public Health Association, by 2030, its projected that more than 20% of the U.S. population will be age 65 and older, up from 13% in 2010 and just under 10% in 1970. Therefore, finding appropriate living arrangements and care for an aging family member is something most everyone will have to consider at some point in their lifetime. With so many different options available for senior care in Georgia, it can be an overwhelming and daunting task to try and find the right facility or professional assistance for your aging loved one. All of the available options have much to offer, but the one that is best for your elder family member will greatly depend upon their individual needs and abilities, as well as the capabilities and amount of time others in the family can be involved in the care of their senior. In an effort to narrow down your search, here is an explanation of some of the different options: Home Health Care Home health care is usually used on a more short-term basis in an effort to help an individual live independently again after an illness or injury. The care may be comprised of physical, occupational and/or speech therapy and is usually administered on a part-time or intermittent basis by a medical professional who comes into your home. Respite Care Respite care is a service that companies provide for seniors whose primary caretakers are usually family members. It is temporary, short-term care that can be contained within an assisted living facility or continuing care retirement facility, or eldercare professionals can be hired to come into your home. Respite care is usually utilized when family caretakers need a day off or are going on vacation. For example, in addition to providing long-term assisted living, Cantons Windsor House provides respite care services that include assistance with daily living activities, medication supervision, housekeeping services, community activities, dining and other amenities in its community. Independent Living Just as the name suggests, independent living communities/facilities are usually a good choice for seniors who require little or no assistance with daily life. The units may provide optional services for residents, such as housekeeping, laundry and meals. Residents of independent units may have some home health care services provided by in-house staff or an outside agency. The community may or may not provide hospitality or supportive services, but if it does, residents have complete choice as to whether or not they want to participate in those services or programs. Assisted Living If an independent living residence doesnt provide the level of support that is needed, then assisted living may be the best choice. Assisted living provides long-term care that combines housing, support services and health care. According to the National Survey of Residential Care Facilities, it is the preferred alternative to nursing home care and is the fastest growing long-term option for seniors. Assisted living facilities will assess residents needs when they move in and will reassess any time they have a change in long-term health or physical needs. They will then develop a personalized care plan based on the results of the individuals assessment. The amenities will vary, but most facilities include meals, housekeeping and laundry services, transportation, 24 hour security, exercise/wellness programs and social and recreational activities. Personal care options usually include emergency call systems in each unit, medication management, access to health and medical services, as well as staff members who will respond to scheduled/unscheduled needs, which usually include help with eating, bathing, dressing, walking and/or toileting. Special Care Units (SCUs) SCUs are assisted living communities for individuals with Alzheimers disease or related dementia. They usually have additional security measures in place, such as cueing devices or specific architectural features, and they must be licensed by the state to ensure that programming specific to the needs of these residents is being provided. The staff members in SCUs are specially trained to work with individuals who have dementia. However, be sure to double check the specific facilitys acceptance regulations, as some will only accept residents who are in the early stages of the disease. SCUs are often housed in a special wing of an assisted living facility. Continuing Care Retirement Communities (CCRC) CCRCs offer all of the different levels of care (independent living, assisted living and nursing home care). Often, there is a long-term agreement/contract between the resident and the community that offers a continuum of the different levels of living arrangements/care, which is based on the individuals needs at different stages of his or her life. The housing, services and health care system are usually all on one site and are covered by state regulations in Georgia. Nursing Homes Nursing Homes can be a short-term or longer-term residential option. They provide nursing or convalescent care for three or more persons unrelated to the licensee. They treat chronic conditions, or provide convalescent or rehabilitative care. Nursing homes are decidedly less private, but are often necessary following an injury or long illness, where the temporary or longer-term resident requires daily nursing. If you notice that your senior family member is having trouble maintaining their home, managing medication, feeding or bathing their self, using the restroom without assistance or if they are having memory loss or other long-term health issues, it may be time to consider one of the above options. For more information on how to find the eldercare option that is right for your loved ones needs, you can visit N4A.org, or call the National Eldercare Locator by the U.S. Administration on Aging at 800-677-1116. Artist Profile: Bill Moore Artistic Woodworking for More Than 7 Decades By Natalie Del Valle Beginning when he was only 13 years old, Bill Moore discovered his talent for working with wood. After 71 years of fine tuning his talent, he can now turn old pieces of wood into stunning furniture. Bill Moore was born in a small town in Alabama, and he lived in the Chicago area for 25 years before moving to Georgia in 2002. He started working with wood in the 7th grade when he took an industrial arts class at his school. Thats when he discovered his passion for woodworking. I was given a saw and a planer and some wood, he says. With these materials and basic tools, he created a footstool, a set of bookends and a hanging shelf. From that day on, he was hooked. Amazingly, other than his 7th grade class, Bill is completely self-taught. He uses several types of wood, including black walnut, maple, oak and cherry. He looks for pieces of wood according to the beauty of the lumber. Just recently, I came across a scrap in the lumberyard. It was a nice piece of black walnut. I bought it, and I turned it into a bench and table, he explains. Even now, Bill only uses standard woodworking tools like saws, hammers, sanders and a lathe to create his pieces. Among his creations are shelves, bed frames and cradles. One piece of work he created years ago is now an heirloom in his family. I made a cradle for my son when he was a newborn, and his sibling also used it. Now my sons children have used it, and my great-grandchildren will use it in the future, he says. Bill has created several memorable projects. Its hard to say which has been the most memorable. Ive enjoyed all the pieces Ive created, he says, but one of my favorites has to be a casual black walnut table. He loves being able to envision what he can make from the wood and then bring his vision to reality. Hes been selling his hand-crafted furniture for about 25 years, but in the last 10 years, he has doubled his effort in selling his work. Bill is constantly working on new pieces to sell between two different galleries. Im currently working on a half dozen different pieces, he says. It usually takes him about 2-3 weeks to create a piece from start to finish. He takes pride in the finish, or the protective glaze that he uses on his pieces. I take my time and sand my work down super smooth before putting on the finish, he explains. Although he mostly focuses on creating pieces for the galleries, he also occasionally takes part in art and craft shows. To view his work or inquire about a custom piece, visit the Ann Art Gallery in Canton or the Westside Market in Atlanta.
Book Review: The Lemoncholy Life of Annie Aster By Jessica Asbell The Lemoncholy Life of Annie Aster, by Scott Wilbanks, is a wonderfully inventive tale that weaves a link between 1890s Kansas and 1990s San Francisco. In 1895 Kansas, Elsbeth Grundy discovers a monstrosity of a house in the middle of her wheat field that wasnt there the day before. Infuriated, she marches up to the house to demand why the owner built it in her field, when suddenly she lands flat on her back, knocked down by something unseen. Undeterred, she writes a letter to the owner of the house and places it in a mysterious mailbox. 100 years later, but still somehow the same day, Annabelle Aster of San Francisco receives it. It seems that the red door that Annie purchased at an antique shop somehow leads her to 1895 and Elsbeth. However, neither is able to get close to the door without being repelled. As Annie and her friend Christian discover the origins of this mysterious door, they learn that its owner was murdered. Thus begins their race to stop a murder that took place one hundred years ago before it happens. As they attempt to change the fate of the magician who created the door, they find that time is a lot more flexible, and the dangers lurking within it are closer than they thought. In their race to stop the murder and to prevent Elsbeth from being charged with it, they change time in ways they couldnt have imagined and discover things about themselves along the way. At its heart, The Lemoncholy Life of Annie Aster is about misfits finding a place to belong. Its filled with twists and turns and a few surprises along the way.

Artist Profile: Elly Hobgood Connecting Through Watercolor By Natalie De Valle From the lens of her camera to the special watercolor paper, Ellys passion and talent with watercolors is obvious in the way she captures powerful images with the graceful stroke of her brush. I never know what will inspire me to paint, Elly Hobgood, Cherokee County Watercolor Artist, explains. It has to grab me. There has to be some sort of emotional connection. Although she was born in Pennsylvania, Elly spent her school years growing up in Georgia. I started with cows and barns because I grew up on a farm. They came out of my paint brush first, she says. Rural scenes arent the only thing Elly enjoys painting. She also paints pictures of local landmarks, like the Crescent Farm Historical Center, locally known as the Rock Barn, and the Cherokee County Courthouse. Her favorite things to paint, however, are flowers and other still life pictures. All of her work starts from photographs she takes with her camera, and sometimes she combines multiple photographs to make one original painting. I started dabbling in watercolors as a stress reliever, taking a few workshops and classes every now and then. That was fourteen years ago, and now Elly is hooked. She has always had a fondness for painting, but it wasnt until after Elly retired from nursing that she started painting full time. She creates a new painting every seven to ten days, but it doesnt always take that long. Sometimes, Ill start a painting in the morning and work all day, through lunch and dinner, and finish it, she says. But just because I finish a piece, doesnt mean I keep it. Sometimes, I dont like how my work turned out, and I have to restart it completely. For two years, she painted beautiful pieces of art work and set them aside, allowing them to pile up, until her husband suggested she should sell her work. She now does art shows across the southeast and sells her work at Chamberhouse in downtown Canton. My art pieces are like children to me. I dont really sell them, but transfer custody of them. Its obvious in her beautiful textures, colors and shapes that Elly spends an abundance of time putting her whole heart into each painting. People whove previously bought and enjoyed my art return to visit me at art shows. Ive made a lot of friends that way. Probably one of the most amazing things about Elly and her work is that shes 90% self-taught. She admits that she only took a few workshops to learn how to make certain things better. She now shares her personal tips and ideas in her local workshops and classes. I teach about 5 workshops a year and have been teaching my foundation class and landscape class for about six years now, Elly says. Her classes and workshops average about 10-15 people, all of whom admire Ellys work and teaching style. To view Elly Hobgoods wonderful pieces, and learn dates for her classes and workshops, go to EllyHobgood.com.
Artist Profile: Allison Elia Making Ideas Tangible By Natalie De Valle Starting with 200 pounds of clay and a sketched out idea, Allison Elia, a local North Fulton artist, can create powerful sculptures of the human form that take on a weightless appearance. Just as effortlessly, she uses her ability to paint vibrant and visually dynamic pictures to add life and color to her figures. I am inspired by the human form and their internal experiences, she says. My art captures a snapshot of an emotional moment that is going on inside a person. Allison has been professionally sculpting since 2010, but has always been artistic. Ive been creating art nonstop since I was about ten years old. Its something Ive always been good at, she proclaims. She grew up in Stow, Ohio, just south of Cleveland and received a MFA in Ceramics at University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth in 2013. Since moving to Georgia in 2014, Allison has had a solo exhibit at Art Center West in Roswell, the same place she has her studio. Shes also a part-time ceramics instructor there. With all her artistic involvement, there is no doubt that her passion lies in art, especially in sculpting. My favorite part of being an artist is taking an idea and making it tangible, she says. When creating a sculpture, Allison starts off sketching out her idea and creating a small model. Then, using a metal armature, she starts carving away at the terracotta clay she uses to make her life-sized figures. The art at that point gets hollowed out and set aside to dry for a week before firing in the kiln. I have to build some of my heavier pieces upside down and then turn them right-side up when they are finished, she explains. It can take up to three months to complete a life-sized sculpture, but it only took her one month to complete Heal, one of her favorite sculptures, from start to finish. Heal shows the emotional experience of finally letting go in the way the apples are floating around the figure, and only a single apple is balanced on the fingertips, she says. She likes to explore the symbolic coexistence between guilt and weight, and hope and buoyancy through her art. Allison creates a new sculpture once every week or two, although not all of them make it to completion. Each piece is its own goal and achievement. Some of them dont work out like they were supposed to or how I imagined, she explains. She sells some of her smaller pieces of work, but most of the full-sized sculptures take up residency in her home. They are everywhere, including under the bed and in the closet. I have them hidden all over my house, basically anywhere I can stash a ceramic body, she laughs. Allison looks forward to being featured in more big art shows. This spring, she will have a solo exhibit at the Art Center West in Roswell. Ashland.edu/cas/calendar/8-21-14/artist-talk-allison-elia

The Exercise Coach The World's Smartest Workout By Kathleen Boehmig The newest location of The Exercise Coach will open in Roswell this month. Owners,Katie Sanders and Adam Stephens, are excited about opening studio number three. Its amazing what you can accomplish with just two, twenty-minute workouts a week, Katie says. Its about muscle quality, not movement quantity. Our approach is the perfect fit for the unlikely exerciser people who are busy, don't like the gym scene, are afraid of getting hurt, perhaps have an injury or ailment which makes them think they cant work out or just plain hate exercise. The Exercise Coach, founded in 2000, has been named among the Top Emerging Franchises for the second year in a row by Franchise Business Review and has been featured on ABC News, NBC News, CBS News, Fox News and USA Today. There are currently 32 locations operating throughout the country, with another 35 in development in Georgia, Indiana, Colorado, Texas, North Carolina, Tennessee, Michigan, Missouri and Arizona. The Exercise Coach expects to have a total of 250 total locations in 35 states by 2017. The current studios in Atlanta are located in Buckhead, Johns Creek and Roswell, with a location in Sandy Springs soon to open and more. The Exercise Coach of Georgia is owned by Katie, her husband, Jason, her father, Moss, step-mom, Tricia Robertson and Adam Stephens, coach turned owner, making it not just a business, but a family endeavor. Brian Cygan, Founder and CEO of The Exercise Coach, has been developing and delivering high-quality exercise programs, like his Right Intensity Training, for over 16 years. Through his life-long study of exercise physiology and training methods, he has discovered that brief, focused exercise is the most effective way to achieve strength, weight loss and overall wellness. This is part of his integration strategy, which works for people who are interested in getting fit without becoming fitness fanatics. We combine advanced technology and personal coaching, Adam says; each twenty-minute session includes personal guidance from an expert coach, interval training that adapts to any fitness level, in an inviting, clean and super-safe environment, and technology that provides real-time feedback statistics, for increased motivation and focus, with data tracking and reporting to instantaneously show your progress. Adam smiles, adding, We guide our clients through Right Intensity Training a scientific exercise protocol where the equipment perfectly matches each individuals current fitness level. Using the equipment is the game-changer. My favorite part of the job is getting someone on the leg press and seeing it blow their minds. Once youve experienced a workout here, youre a believer! Katie emphasizes, This is not a gym; its a studio, with expert personal trainers. And its preventive medicine, where we give each member the right dose of exercise. You know, youre going to pay for your health one way or another, whether its through medicine, doctor visits, surgeries or being proactive to avoid as much of that as possible. Here, we give you quantifiable results, delivering a better quality of life. Its a minimal investment in your time, resulting in a great investment in your health. For the average person, Adam states, more exercise does not mean better results. Too much exercise leads to over-training, injury and burnout. The healthier and more productive approach is to exercise smarter, not longer. Our equipment provides constant computer feedback to increase motivation and determination. Our approach delivers dramatically better results for men and women of all ages. And its not only the worlds most efficient workout its also efficient on your wallet, Adam says. Because we are a franchise, we are able to deliver personal training at about 50% less than the average cost of personal trainers and with no long-term contracts, where you are stuck no matter what your results are with exercise. At The Exercise Coach, you will achieve results if you come to your sessions and even more results if you implement dietary changes. Your coach will help keep you motivated and will help with your nutrition ... theres no need for contracts here. Membership at The Exercise Coach also includes the 30-Day Metabolic Comeback Challenge, a plan that combines whole-effort exercise, whole-food nutrition and strategic supplementation. Its more than a weight loss plan, Katie says; it puts you on the right track hormonally and re-sets your metabolism in as little as 30 days of focused effort. I always wanted to work in a business where I could help people, Katie adds. At The Exercise Coach, we help add years to peoples lives and help improve quality of life. She continues, We dont just change your lifestyle, we change your life in only forty minutes a week. The Exercise Coach1145 Woodstock Road,Suite 605Roswell, Georgia 30075770-857-3269ExerciseCoach.com

Artist Profile: John McCleer Glass House Art By Julie Senger While Roswell resident, John McCleer, has been involved in some facet of the art industry for over 45 years, he didnt come by his current artistic passion in the traditional sense. Rather than apprenticing or going to a four-year art school to hone his talent, he gathered something of use from several of his work experiences and business ventures along the way. Johns first part-time job was working in a custom frame shop, where he learned how to cut glass with precision and build custom frames for its clients. Later, he would go on to own or work for various companies who dealt in interior design, manufacturing furniture, oriental rugs, or compiling corporate art collections for companies and country clubs all over the world. He would be given the portion of the overall budget for how much a company wanted to spend adorning their facilities with one-of-a-kind works, for which he had to seriously consider the way certain colors and types of lines or subject matter within a work might positively or negatively affect the mood of that companys environment or its clientele. Eventually, John was looking to begin a retirement business, so he pulled from all the knowledge and skills hed acquired over the years to found Glass House Art, LLC and began creating his delicate works of art that patrons from all over the world have come to love and enjoy. While John creates beautiful, custom glass windows for businesses and homes and replicates personal things from his clients photographs, such as cars or motorcycles, his passion and niche has been replicating his clients pets. Its wonderfully amazing to see the bond people have with their animals, and the lengths to which they will go to commemorate them, John said. For example, one client of Johns had a sister who lost her beloved dog, Reya. John created a glass mosaic based on a photo of Reya, which was so detailed and accurate, that when he and the family of Reyas owner gathered to surprise her with the piece, she automatically knew it was her dog, and was moved to tears because of her instant connection with it. John stated, It was a beautiful moment. We were all very emotional as we watched Reyas owner continually touch the image in the glass, as though doing so allowed her to touch Reya again. This is why we do this, said John. This is why we spend weeks looking for the perfect colors of glass, with the perfect grains and textures, and then painstakingly do every bit of the construction by hand, no machines. Its a comforting, relaxing, labor of love, and at the end of all of that effort, you get to see that something youve poured yourself into produces this type of reaction and connection. Johns work can be found for sale on Etsy, or samples of his work can be found at GlassHouseArt.com or on Facebook. He can be contacted at 404-272-9333 or at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. to discuss producing a special, personal works of art. Artist Profile: Heber Pampillon Guitarist For the Award Winning, Kickin' Valentina By Julie Senger Heber is the talented, hard-rocking guitarist for Kickin Valentina, who started playing music when he was 13, and he also happens to call Woodstock, home. When asked how he got started in music, he states, I wanted to play guitar, so I walked into a music store in NJ, where I grew up, and told the guy that if he could play Stairway to Heaven, that Id take lessons from him, and he did. So I took lessons. I was blessed to have some great music teachers who always pushed me. From there, it just snowballed into playing in a bunch of different rock bands, and country and wedding bands. It was just constantly music music music, which was a good thing for me, because where I grew up was kind of a rough place. If it wasnt for music, I dont know where Id be. In addition to being the guitarist for Kickin Valentina, Heber is also a songwriter, producer and music teacher at North Fulton School of Music. Some of his influences are Jimi Hendrix, Jake E Lee, John Sykes, and the bands Aerosmith and Kiss. Throughout his music career, hes been fortunate to play all over the world and perform shows with a lot of great musicians. Some of the more recent, notable artists and bands include: Buckcherry, Queensryche, Skid Row, Sebastian Bach, Faster Pussycat, Kix, LA Guns, Warrant, Autograph, Tom Keifer, Kip Winger and Femme Fatale, just to name a few. Hebers influences, as well as a look at bands hes toured with, are good indicators of the type of sound you can expect from the award winning music of Kickin Valentina. Having only formed in 2013, theyve already received GA Music Awards Rock Band of the Year honor in 2014, and GA Music Awards Video of the Year award in 2015 for their song, Wrong Way. When I spoke with Heber, Kickin Valentina had just gotten off of a tour that took them all over the United States. Their song, Get Ready, is currently being used by the Jacksonville Axemen rugby team for their promotional commercials and is played during their home games. Additionally, Get Ready and their song, Alone, is being featured in the movie, Altered, from award winning film director, Kely McClung. Kickin Valentina recently released their new album, Super Atomic, much to the delight of their ever-growing, die-hard fan base in the U.S. and abroad. When asked if he had any advice for aspiring musicians, Heber replied, Dont give up! If you love music, then just keep playing, on any level you can. People define success in many different ways. If I can pay my bills and support my family playing music, that equals success for me. If you miss the guitar-driven rock n roll of the 80s and early 90s, Kickin Valentina is just what you need to fill that void in your current music library. Their new album, Super Atomic, can be purchased on iTunes, Amazon or directly from their website at KickinValentina.com. KickinValentina.com
Book Review: Born in Fire Romance is in the Air By Catherine Groves While I almost never fall upon a romance novel to review, in the first Nora Roberts series I ever read, I found my heart stolen by her Irish, lyrical manner of showing romance in the sweetest of all ways. I simply fell in love with the stirrings and romantic overtures of Maggie and Rogan. The first in this trilogy, Born in Fire, passes the ultimate test; it keeps me coming back for another read. Watching Maggie fall in love, in spite of her determination to do anything but fall in love, becomes a scene of anticipated yearning for the reader. Set in the mystical land of Ireland, Maggie is an artist, breathing fire into her glass sculptures. Rogan is a savvy businessman. These two characters are from two opposite ends of the spectrum, and they set off immediate sparks between each other. In Born in Fire, Roberts shows family loyalties, along with family heartache. Maggies father was a dreamer, and her mother was a bitter woman. Maggie, fiercely loyal to her family and heritage, must find her own path to love. Roberts eloquently portrays tenderness, passion and heartache. In a bit of a Cinderella way, this first in the Born in Fire trilogy is meant to be devoured, knowing that the second and third ones await! Born in Fire, Born in Ice and Born in Shame may be purchased at most major book stores and are also available on Nook and Kindle.
Frank Reynolds: The American Sheriff Honesty, Integrity, Transparency By Kathleen Boehmig Frank Reynolds is prepared to be your next Sheriff. In testimonials and endorsements for him, several descriptors appear over and over: integrity, respect, leadership, honesty, service. Ive been preparing myself for this job for decades, since the beginning of my career in law enforcement, Frank declares. I love living in Cherokee County, he adds. I love its people and its history. His family has deep roots in the area, dating back to the mid-1930s. For instance, Franks dad, Roy H. Reynolds Jr., was a well-known naval and airline pilot and co-owner of Reynolds Ford. Frank, age 45, has lived in Cherokee County for 32 years. He attended Canton Elementary and Cherokee High School before going on to graduate from Riverside Military Academy. Frank also graduated from Reinhardt University and earned his Master of Public Administration and Justice Administration degree from Columbus State University. He completed command training at the Georgia Law Enforcement Command College, has a Criminal Justice Certification from the University of Virginia and attended the FBI National Academy. He spent eight years on the Cherokee County SWAT team, and hes a Firearms Instructor and Defensive Tactics Instructor, as well. He met his wife, Dr. Jennifer DeBord Reynolds, at Reinhardt University. Jennifer, a life-long resident of the Waleska area, is a Special Education teacher in Cherokee County, and shes a member of the Cherokee County Service League. Frank and Jennifer have three children: Frank II, Emelia and Sophia. Frank is currently a Captain and member of the Pickens Sheriffs Office Senior Command Staff. In 1994, he began his career in Cherokee County law enforcement with the Cherokee Sheriffs office under the leadership of Sheriff Roger Garrison, where he served for over a decade. Frank is known as a strategic thinker who believes in teamwork, accountability and professionalism. He has garnered many awards, including a Medal of Bravery, a Meritorious Service Award and Special Recognition from the Department of State. In 2005, Frank was selected to join the Department of States High-Threat Protection Program as an independent contractor in Iraq. For over three years, Franks mission was to provide diplomatic security for representatives of the United States government during the reconstruction of Iraq. Frank was the personal security officer for many high-ranking U.S. diplomats and military leaders, including the Deputy Chief of Mission, the Department of Homeland Security Attach and the Senior Advisor for the Minister of the Interior. In 2008, Frank returned home with a renewed appreciation of the United States Constitution and what it means to be an American. Working in Iraq gave me a heightened sense of how blessed we are here in the United States, Frank says. It really puts everything in perspective. We need to preserve those blessings, protect our constitutional rights and our way of life. In Cherokee County, we already enjoy much of whats best in America. Its the Sheriffs job to maintain the connection between law enforcement and the community, to earn and maintain the trust that has been built under our previous leaders. One project Frank would like to implement is a Sheriffs Academy. Open to all residents, the Academy would meet twice a week, for six weeks. Citizens will get to see what the Sheriffs office does. They will observe patrolling, criminal investigation and court services. Its important that our community understands how we operate. This is one way we can build positive, meaningful relationships and provide transparency. Its a great form of outreach. Franks platform is clearly outlined on his website, FrankReynoldsForSheriff.com: preservation of constitutional rights, including the 2nd Amendment right to responsible gun ownership; school, residential and business safety; strict budget oversight and community outreach. The American Sheriff holds a unique position, Frank says. He is the only elected, public official who has both constitutional powers, as well as powers of arrest, and answers directly to the citizens he represents. In addition to providing security at the courthouse, serving warrants and running the jail, the Sheriff holds the privilege and responsibility of earning and maintaining the peoples trust and our great quality of life. Its a calling and an opportunity to set an example for other communities. Ive worked for great leaders in Cherokee County and abroad; I want to follow in their footsteps and move forward, keeping the best of Cherokees small-town values and using the most modern, contemporary and effective methods in law enforcement. Im asking for the job. I believe in service above self, and Im raising my hand to say I will step forward and serve once again. Elect Frank ReynoldsP.O.
