Artist Profile: Scott McIntyre Muralist and Musician By Heike Hellmann-Brown Scott McIntyres murals can be found from the West Coast of California to the kingdom of Jordan, halfway around the world. McIntyre grew up in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., and knew early on that he wanted to be an artist. In second grade, teachers requested my help to create bulletin boards for their classes. It was a talent that helped me to get out of math class, McIntyre jokes. His parents cultivated his artistic skills by sending him to art camps and planning vacations around visiting a Frank Lloyd Wright house or seeing an Andrew Wyeth painting. Later, McIntyre earned a scholarship and graduated with a BFA degree from the Atlanta College of Art. McIntyres first job allowed him to decorate window backdrops for Elizabeth Taylors White Diamonds perfume launch and Evander Holyfields book presentation at Macys. Additionally, he instructed students at Emory Universitys theater department in faux finishing and marbleizing techniques. Set design taught me to paint big, McIntyre recalls. With the whole stage as my canvas and a 4-inch brush in my hand, I learned to create depth with perspective and color. On top of that, I had to paint fast, and the final piece needed to be appealing from various angles. Soon McIntyre was approached by interior designers. One of his earliest clients was actor Alan Thicke, who flew him out to Los Angeles to paint his sons room. McIntyre continued to enhance multimillion-dollar homes, but ultimately missed the artistic control that other projects offered. His recent works have included painting a mural in the Media Center of Mt. Bethel Elementary School in Marietta and commissioned paintings for a multitude of venues, including churches, restaurants, bars, and assisted living communities. Still, McIntyre cherishes his work at local schools. Painting during school hours gives students the chance to observe a visiting artist, he notes. For schools in need of financing such a large project McIntyre developed Legacy Murals. During a PTA-event, he explains, students can use a laser pointer to choose a location on the mural where their name will be hidden, for a nominal fee. This program not only finances the mural costs but also raises PTA funds for years to come. McIntyres style is inspired by the realism of Andrew Wyeth and the storytelling of Norman Rockwell. His murals grace interior and exterior walls and will last for decades. In 2011, McIntyre was invited by the Jordan River Foundation to guide 20 young artists in painting a mural in the Royal Village of Zarqa. Murals touch people, McIntyre says of his dedication. They create a feeling of belonging and leave a lasting impact. Murals make this world a better place. McIntyre is also a seasoned musician who learned playing stand-up bass from Trigger Alpert of the original Glenn Miller Band. Currently, McIntyre plays an energetic mix of early New Orleans-style jazz in The Jugtime Ragband. One day I hope to implement Legacy Murals worldwide while performing with the band at international venues letting the beauty of what I love be what I do. McIntyreMurals.com
Artist Profile: Emma Bell Revisiting a Childhood Passion By Heike Hellmann-Brown Florals, still-lifes and seascapesinspired by French impressionist Claude Monet are the trademark of artist Emma Bell. Bell grew up in a small village near Manchester, England. As a child, her parents encouraged her artistic endeavors whether ballet, dance, piano, flute, or sketching. Later, Bell studied business management and worked in marketing for 10 years, until the transfer of her husband relocated her to the Atlanta area in 2008. Two weeks after our move, I learned I was pregnant, recalls Bell, whose boys now are 4 and 2 years old. While organizing her new life in the United States and raising her kids, Bell rediscovered an old passion: painting. She took various art classes and found herself greatly influenced by an eight-week course in Duluth she took in 2013 with instructor Larry Smith, who introduced her to the use of a palette knife. The impressionistic style paired with a palette knife gives me a lot of freedom in my creative process, especially when creating the flow of water, she explains. One of my favorite subject matters is the ocean probably because I am originally from a cold climate and saw the beach only once a year during our summer vacation. Bell often uses the photography of her twin sister, Victoria, for reference. I go through phases, she states. In early summer, I tend to like to paint beaches and boats, then I will get stuck and do a series of bright, bold florals, then I transgress to landscapes or even fun abstracts. She maintains a home studio and paints in oil on gallery-wrapped canvas. Apart from originals, Bells work is available as gicle reproductions. She also accepts commissions or paints similar to previously sold items on request. Its an amazing, satisfying feeling when someone buys my work and puts it in his or her house, she says, noting that with each sale her confidence as a painter grows. Bell still researches fellow artists and takes classes to enhance her technique, although she feels she has come a long way since first rekindling her childhood passion. Painting started as a hobby, but now I see it thriving. In the last year I made a lot of progress, not only in what I can accomplish artistically but also in regard to exposure and recognition, she says. I believe what sets me apart as an artist is my marketing background. While I strive to evolve as an artist, at the same time I can apply my marketing knowledge to make myself more visible with the goal to be represented by more galleries and find myself in a position where I am financially able to visit my family in the United Kingdom more often. Life is great. I am able to do what I love best: spend time with my family and create beautiful paintings. Emma Bells work is currently available online and locally through Synergy Gallery in Roswell. EmmaBellFineArt.com
Top 7 Things to Ask a Wedding Planner By Erica Prewett Planning a wedding can be overwhelming for the bride and groom to-be and their families. You may be wondering where to start, how to budget, and what elements you can realistically pull off, or if your grand ideas for your big day could land you in the Top 10 of #pinterestfail countdowns. With more than 10 years experience producing more than 300 weddings and events, Ive got great stories for days. Here are my top questions to keep in mind when choosing or working with a wedding planner: 1 How much will you personally work with the wedding planner? Some planners book lots of brides and grooms, but the couple doesnt get to meet or work with the actual person in charge of planning the wedding until the walk-through (or the rehearsal or, in some instances, even the wedding day). This is detrimental to the whole wedding experience because the wedding planner and client relationship is very similar to the relationship the couple should have with the photographer. A high level of comfort with each other and a high level of trust are imperative for a smooth, successful wedding day. 2 Can you use your own outside vendors, or does the wedding planner only work with preferred vendors? Some wedding planners prefer to work exclusively with their own vendors. Typically, there is a higher level of trust internally on the vendor side if the planner and vendor have worked together before (even once is good) and things tend to go more smoothly if the couple uses a team that already knows everyone. Any solid planner will be able to create a rapport and professional relationship with any professional vendor you decide to hire. 3 But, what if your friend or family member can make gorgeous arrangements and has offered to do your wedding flowers? How sweet of her to offer! You certainly have that right to use whomever you wish. Remember, though, most non-professional vendors arent used to the intricate, high stress, and time-sensitive nature of weddings. We once had a friend of the brides family offer to do the flowers for the wedding and the reception. She had flown in the week of the wedding, picked up all of the supplies, and was on the right track until she overslept on the wedding morning and then had a flat tire on the way to the setup! We had to enlist friends, extended family and extra planning staff to get the flowers done and the room cleaned up before the reception started. While the bride may have saved money on not hiring a florist, several of her friends and family who had flown across the country missed the wedding ceremony because they were on flower duty. A professional builds in backup plans and is generally faster at creating arrangements that have to be built on site. 4 How can you know if youre being charged a fair amount, or are getting an up-charged wedding fee? This was a big source of conversation a couple of years ago. Couples were getting the impression that vendors up-charged their services just because the couple said the word wedding. The answer is you are getting the wedding price, and it is still fair. The same amount of flour, sugar, and icing goes into a cake that serves 175 for a kids birthday party as does a wedding cake, right? So, why are wedding cakes more expensive? The level of detail, importance to be perfect, and, oftentimes, the design of the wedding cake requires someone with vastly more skill and experience to produce than a kids sheet cake. The wedding cake designer, because they have more experience, costs more to the bakery company. Also, the emotion of theres only one opportunity to get it right plays into the fee. 5 Why is your preferred wedding date already booked everywhere? May, June and October are the busiest wedding months in the Atlanta area, because the weather is just so gorgeous. If you were lucky enough to get engaged this past holiday season and want to book a venue in these popular months, be flexible with a non-Saturday date. Venues (and vendors) often give discounts or upgrades to weekday, Friday night, or Sunday weddings. 6 How much should this shindig cost? According to CostOfWedding.com, couples who live in or travel to Fulton County spend between $22,031 and $36,719, on average, for their wedding, which includes about 175 guests. Keep in mind the elements that are most important, as thats where a bulk of the money should go. While having fun and a great band are high on the list, guests also expect a satiating dinner. A wedding planner can help identify how much money should go toward each area while still giving your guests a really great experience that doesnt send them home hungry and heading to the nearest fast food drive-thru. 7 If youre an organized person already, do you even need a wedding planner? That depends on how much you and your mom would like to spend enjoying the day versus worrying if the cake has arrived, if the minister signed the marriage license, etc. If a planner like Jennifer Lopez from the movie The Wedding Planner is not in your budget, consider hiring a month-of coordinator. This person will be involved 45-60 days before the wedding and help tie up the loose ends; schedule final meetings with the venue, caterer and florist; create the wedding weekend timeline; and be there to manage the day so that your mom can get her hair done with the girls. Above all, remember that you are not planning a wedding. You are planning the first day of your married life together! The two of you are planning a marriage celebration. Thats what is most important! Erica Prewett is a Queen of Checklists, Saver of Time, Master of Logistics, and Helper of Flower Girls. She owns A Big To Do Event. The colors, styles and possibilities are virtually endless. But, the fact that there are so many choices may leave you unsure even overwhelmed at where to start. Keely Woodford, and her design team at Decorating Den Interiors can customize a look tailored uniquely to your individual design preferences, lifestyle and budget. Keely has more than 25 years experience in interior design, including approximately six years with Decorating Den Interiors, the nations largest in-home decorating service. As an independent owner and designer for a national company, Keely and her design team can offer clients exclusive benefits and an extensive selection of designs and furnishings by top manufacturers. Decorating Den Interiors features an extensive product assortment of quality home furnishings, including custom window treatments, furniture, lighting, floor coverings, accessories, and wallpaper. Decorating Den Interiors is a full-service design company that provides complete home decorating around clients individual needs and budgets. What is unique about Decorating Den Interiors is our ability to offer clients custom designer services within their budgets, with no additional fees, Keely explains. Our initial design consultation and professional design services that go into selecting every color, fabric, window treatment, piece of furniture and accessory are always complimentary. The only costs to clients are for the items they purchase from our selections, which are listed at fair market value with no up-charge. Decorating Den Interiors features a wide array of furnishings and fabrics in all price points to offer clients beautiful, sophisticated choices within their budgets. Whether you have $1,000 or $200,000 in your decorating budget, we can customize a design that fits your style and your budget. No job is too small for us, she says. In addition, Keely and her design team oversee delivery and installation of all design pieces. Beginning with the initial consultation, the designers work one on one with clients to understand their design preferences and goals. Keely explains that its important to ask the right questions and listen to what clients want. In some instances, clients may want to create a design around special pieces they already have; others may want to start with a completely new look. Keely describes the design services as lifestyle decorating, customized according to clients individual needs. Do they like to entertain; do they have children or pets; what colors and patterns do they like or dislike; will someone else need to approve the selections? The design has to fit with clients own style and lifestyle so that it is both pretty and practical for them. During the consultation, one of the designers will also tour the home, take photos and measurements, and discuss the budget. Its rare for clients to do their entire homes at once, she adds. I always suggest starting with the area that is most important to them. Keely and the design team work together to create a complete design customized for individual clients. Typically within a week of the initial consultation, Keely will come out to the clients homes again for the design presentation, which includes everything from floor plans to fabrics, colors and patterns, furniture and accessories. Clients love working with Decorating Den Interiors because we do everything for them design, shopping, delivery and installation, Keely says. In fact, Keely explains that clients actually save money working with Decorating Den Interiors by avoiding the common mistakes of DIY decorating. We are professionals, so we understand the importance that scale, lighting, colors and patterns play in a rooms overall design. We make design easy for clients by taking the guesswork off of them. Keely keeps clients updated throughout the design process, then unveils the finished design all at once in a grand reveal similar to how its done on HGTV. Theres nothing like that wow factor when clients see their newly designed room for the first time, Keely says. Whether you dont know where to start, dont know how to take your room to the next level or just dont have the time to do it yourself, we work one on one with you to understand your ideas and design the home of your dreams. Huntington Learning Center Academic Success for Life By Michelle Martin Every child can learn; the key to academic success is in understanding that each child learns differently. At Huntington Learning Center in Woodstock, the team of professional tutors is experienced in helping students achieve academic success at any level. New owners Ramana Panchumarthy and his wife, Vasudha Edara, executive director, along with partners Shreyas and Jignasa Desai, marketing and community relations, are excited to continue Huntington Learning Centers 12-year history serving Woodstock and surrounding communities. As local business owners for the past 10 years and with two sons in middle school, Ramana and Vasudha are grateful for the opportunity to serve the Woodstock community in a new way. We recognize the important role that Huntington Learning Center plays in helping students learn outside of the classroom so that they can be more successful in school, Ramana says. Jignasa, whose husband, Shreyas, has a masters degree in mathematics and teaches at Atlanta Metropolitan State College, says he sees firsthand how a lack of fundamentals affects students. So many students are failing because they lack a basic understanding of fundamentals in mathematics. That deficiency will follow them later in life and in business, she says. But with the proper foundation in fundamentals, students can continue to learn and be more successful. Huntington Learning Center, established in 1977, provides professional academic tutoring and learning resources based on curriculum that is aligned with current national educational standards. Programs include academic skills (reading, writing, math, phonics, spelling, vocabulary, study skills, and critical thinking); subject tutoring (algebra, pre-algebra, geometry, trigonometry, pre-calculus, calculus, earth science, biology, chemistry, and physics); and exam prep (ACT, SAT, PSAT, AP, and other entrance exams). Huntington Learning Center customizes learning programs to students individual needs based on standardized test results. Traditional tutoring is like a band-aid to help students improve in their current areas of study. Many times, students rely on memorization rather than mastery of skills, says Diane Alred, director of the Woodstock Huntington Learning Center for five years. The Huntington Learning Center approach is more like surgery, designed to build the basic fundamentals necessary for long-term academic success. Based on students individual academic assessment, Huntington Learning Center tutors will meet with parents to discuss areas of strengths and weaknesses, and customize a program to help fill in specific learning gaps. All instruction is done at Huntington Learning Center by certified, experienced instructors. Students are tested at different phases in the program to gauge their academic progress; adjustments can be made at any time if students are learning faster than expected or if they require additional focus in a specific study area. As Diane explains, learning programs begin at students individual comfort levels and progress in difficulty so that they can see their own success firsthand. Students want to learn. As they become more successful and more confident, they are more motivated to study and work hard to achieve their academic goals. The instructors at Huntington Learning Center work closely with teachers to monitor students progress at the center and in the classroom. In addition, instructors meet with parents every few weeks to keep them updated as well. Huntington instructors, students, parents, school teachers we all are partners working together to help students succeed academically, says Jignasa. It is especially important for parents to understand that good grades in school do not necessarily reflect skills. Huntington Learning Centers subject tutoring also involves helping students develop better organizational skills and homework habits. In many cases, its just a matter of focus. And for some students, that might mean seeking the help from someone other than their parents and teachers, Ramana says. Once students develop good organizational skills, study skills and homework habits, they are better prepared to tackle studying on their own. In addition to individual subject tutoring and a focus on fundamentals, Huntington Learning Center also offers an exam prep program for standardized tests, entrance exams, and the PSAT, SAT, and ACT. Huntington instructors can help students determine which test is best suited to their strengths and offer tips to maximize their scoring potential. Then, based on the results of practice tests, instructors work with students to improve in specific test areas. The exam prep program is also beneficial to students hoping to earn a certain score required for certain scholarships and more selective schools. As Ramana explains, On average, students who go through Huntingtons ACT prep program score three to six points higher than they would without any specialized exam prep. The difference between a 20 and a 24, for example, could be significant for students hoping to get into a specific school or applying for scholarships. This is also a critical time for students as they approach the end of the current school year. Diane encourages parents to address their childrens learning gaps as soon as possible. Unfortunately, by the time students come to Huntington Learning Center for help, they have been struggling for three to four years, she says. But, its never too late to learn. Adds Ramana, At Huntington Learning Center, we believe confidence builds success in students. We are proud to be a part of a program that helps students achieve academic success so that they can be more successful not only in school but also in life. 6244 Old Hwy. 5, Woodstock678-445-1515Woodstock.HuntingtonHelps.com
Summit Financial Solutions A Driving Force in Your Financial Success By Michelle Martin As another tax season gets underway, it is important for business owners and individuals to be aware of increasingly complex and confusing tax codes. Joseph Parker and his team at Summit Financial Solutions in Woodstock offer a variety of financial, business and tax planning services to help clients not only minimize their tax liability but also develop a strategy for growing their businesses, saving for both short-term and long-term goals, and financial planning. As Mr. Parker explains, Summit Financial Solutions offers comprehensive planning services by experienced, qualified professionals who take time to understand clients individual needs, offer informed solutions and essentially become their partner in helping them reach their financial goals. Mr. Parker is president and executive tax director of Summit Financial Services, which has served businesses and individuals in Cherokee County and surrounding areas since 1989. He joined Summit Financial Solutions in 2002, while studying accounting and finance at Kennesaw State University. Business Planning & Services As an experienced business owner himself, Mr. Parker understands firsthand the critical role that strategic planning plays in the success of any business, big or small. More than anything, I think of myself as a business consultant and part-time CFO, he says. Mr. Parker works closely with business owners to help them manage inventory, taxes, and employee levels within a range that is affordable and maintainable. I can look at the company objectively, in black and white, and identify where savings are possible, and help business owners get to the next level. My goal is to implement a system that they can manage themselves, like a well-oiled machine that just needs routine maintenance. Mr. Parker spends time with clients to understand their specific situation, then he makes recommendations that will work for them. As he explains, Every business and every business owner is different, so what works for one company may not work for another. My job is to get to know businesses and business owners individually, and to anticipate what their next five steps are and help them plan to reach their goals. Mr. Parker has found that, like in most areas of life, business owners are creatures of habit and hesitant to implement big changes in how theyve operated. In some instances, its simply a matter of finding a solution within their comfort zone. While they might see bigger savings and growth potential from bigger changes, theyre willing to accept the tradeoff of doing what works for them, he says. The key is learning what is important to them. Summit Financial Systems also assists with payroll administration or trains business owners to use recommended software programs for managing payroll in-house. Tax Preparation & Planning Mr. Parker is an Enrolled Agent with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), the highest credential given outside the agency. All Enrolled Agents must pass a three-part test covering individual and business tax laws, and complete 72 hours of continuing education courses every three years. As an Enrolled Agent, Mr. Parker has the authority to represent taxpayers and to serve as Power of Attorney in IRS matters. New and changing tax laws each year make tax filing increasingly difficult. On average, individuals will spend 33 hours preparing an itemized tax return with interest and dividends on their own, Mr. Parker says. Using an over-the-counter tax software program will require, on average, an additional 10 hours. Through proactive tax planning and preparation, Summit Financial Solutions can help minimize your tax liability in current and future tax years. The world is full of tax preparers who can complete the necessary forms by the tax deadline, but what are they doing to help you save money? Mr. Parker asks. At Summit, we will examine your situation and records to determine what benefits you the most filing jointly or separately; timing the sale of assets; identifying applicable deductions and credits. Tips for Choosing a Tax Preparer Mr. Parker recommends doing your homework when choosing a tax professional. Just as it is a bad idea to hire a home-repair contractor or a nanny without doing a personal-needs assessment and careful investigation, it is never wise to hire a tax professional without doing the same, he says. Never base your decision solely on cost. The complexity of your tax return. Your occupation or industry. Does the preparer have specialized training in dealing with your tax situation (i.e. small businesses, elder issues, rental real estate activities, etc.)? Is future financial advice important to you? If the IRS questions something or audits your return, will they be available after tax season? Is this an included service or will it be an additional charge? What is the fee structure? Do they charge a flat rate or by the form? Never use a preparer who advertises large refunds or whose fee is based on a percentage of your refund. Beware of preparers who offer a low quote to get you in the door and then charge by the line entry. Large cookie-cutter firms that pop up on every corner at tax time do not necessarily offer the best value or employ experienced tax preparers. Do you feel that they are trustworthy with your private information? Do they help you with clear, professional answers to your questions? If you are a business client, do they help with business-related planning as well? How long has the preparer been in the tax business? What type of credentials or designations do they maintain? Do they continually upgrade their knowledge by meeting continuing-education requirements? Does the preparer belong to any professional organizations? Belonging to a reputable professional organization indicates a commitment to excellence. Professional organizations also provide training and updates on tax court decisions. Is the preparer a long-time member of your community? Consider what that says about their reliability, loyalty, and trustworthiness. Length of time in business often parallels business skills. There is a lot of responsibility that comes with signing a tax return, Mr. Parker adds. Tax preparers who arent willing to sign a tax return arent worth your risk. After all, its your name, finances, and peace of mind at stake. Summit Financial Solutions1816 Eagle Drive, Building 100, Suite A, Woodstock770-928-8100SFSGA.com

Medici Medical Arts Multi-Disciplinary Pain Center By Michelle Martin For too many people, pain has become an everyday part of life. Many people, unable to identify and treat the source of the pain after countless doctor visits, have suffered for years with some form of chronic pain. This type of ongoing pain can affect people's mental and emotional health as well. Many people with chronic pain become dependent upon prescription medications, develop depression, and experience problems in relationships with family and friends. Sonny Dosanjh, M.D., wants to reassure people with chronic pain that there is hope. He is an ABMS Board Certified Physiatrist (Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation) and Emory Fellowship Trained Pain Medicine specialist. He is also the founder, CEO and Chief Medical Officer of Medici Medical Arts, with offices in Buckhead, Dunwoody and Woodstock. An Ambulatory Surgical Center is scheduled to come online in mid-2015. "Unfortunately, symptoms can be misleading and the cause of the pain may be difficult to diagnose. Pain is the body's alarm system and an unpleasant sensory and emotional experience, which is associated with tissue damage and indicates inflammation. When pain is masked with pharmaceuticals, such as painkillers rather than getting to the source of the pain it's essential to take time with patients to have a thorough understanding of their symptoms, history and physical exam to get to the source of the pain. It is of the utmost importance to treat patients with compassion, and build a relationship of trust and communication," he says.Dr. Dosanjh, a native of Canada, came to the United States in 2007 to complete his residency in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Emory University after earning his medical degree in England. In addition, Dr. Dosanjh completed a Multi-Disciplinary Pain Fellowship with the Emory University Anesthesia Department. Dr. Dosanjh's extensive specialty training, combined with his own interest and background in Sports Medicine as a professional football player and martial artist, brings a unique perspective to pain management. "I have always dreamed of opening a multi-disciplinary pain and sports medicine center," he says. Medici Medical Arts offers a multi-disciplinary medical approach to diagnosing and treating chronic neck, spine, back, nerve, muscle and joint disorders, along with pain associated with automobile accidents, sports injuries, work-related injuries, long-term illness, concussions and migraine headaches. Dr. Dosanjh incorporates physical medicine, rehabilitation, intervention, minimally invasive procedures, cutting-edge stem cell and platelet-rich plasma injections, and overall wellness to provide integrative pain solutions using limited pharmaceutical assistance. The team at Medici Medical Arts includes a Neurologist, Psychiatrist, Physical Therapist and Nurse Practitioner, and all of his ancillary staff. "At other medical centers, it's easy for patients to get lost in the system because they're referred out to one doctor after another. Our staff of experienced specialists, therapists and practitioners in one central facility allows us to come together easily for consultations and develop integrated treatment options for our patients," he says. The Medici Medical Arts team provides comprehensive diagnostic services, including X-ray, MRI, ultrasound and electromyography. Treatment options include traditional, alternative and advanced protocols like epidural injections, radiofrequency ablation, spinal cord stimulators, botox for migraines and spasticity, stem cell therapy and many others. A complete listing of Conditions Treated and Procedures Performed is available on their website at www.MediciMedicalArts.com. As Dr. Dosanjh explains, a Treatment Plan is developed according to patients' individual needs based on a complete medical evaluation, patient history and imaging, if necessary. "It's important to spend time with patients and show them that you care simply by listening to them," he says. "Patients often are misdiagnosed because of the limited time they have with their providers." To make matters worse, Dr. Dosanjh explains that misdiagnosis can have life-altering effects if unnecessary medications or surgery are recommended. He recalls two instances when patients came to Medici Medical Arts after having been diagnosed by other doctors with serious issues that could have had long-term effects on their health and quality of life. In both instances, Dr. Dosanjh identified the source of the pain and treated the pain successfully without surgery. "Not every diagnosis and treatment is simple," he adds, "but it's important to pay attention to patients and to do a thorough physical exam. I try to treat my patients like I would my own family with compassionate, focused care." Dr. Dosanjh also emphasizes nutrition and wellness as part of patients' evaluation. "No matter what your condition, proper nutrition and exercise play a big role in overall health," he says, adding that vitamin and electrolyte deficiencies can be a major contributor to pain. Lab tests, performed on patients, will indicate any vitamin, mineral or electrolyte deficiencies, hormonal imbalances, diabetes, presence of narcotics or other issues. Dr. Dosanjh may recommend physical therapy to help patients increase range of motion, improve flexibility or build strength so that they can begin an exercise program. "An increase in lean body mass correlates to a more successful outcome, so we stress nutrition and exercise as the fundamentals to overall health and wellness," he says. Other health issues associated with chronic pain can include depression and addiction. As Dr. Dosanjh explains, depression brought on by pain can result in even further problems. "Women and men alike can experience diminished sex drive and fatigue as a result of depression, which can affect intimacy and relationships," he says. People may also become dependent upon narcotics and other pharmaceuticals used to deal with the pain. A dependency upon narcotics may lead to financial problems as well. "It's imperative that we are mindful of all the different issues that people can develop as a result of living with pain," Dr. Dosanjh says. "At Medici Medical Arts, we work with patients to not only identify and treat the source of their pain but also to help them understand the source of their depression and/or addiction, and break the cycle." Dr. Dosanjh works with Dr. Blazen Draguljic, (M.D.), a specialist in psychiatry addictionology, to help patients sort through the mental, physical and dependency issues often associated with chronic pain. Whenever possible, Dr. Draguljic and Dr. Dosanjh like to involve family members to get their perspective on how patients' pain, depression and addiction have impacted not only the individual patients but also their loved ones. "In most cases, people don't recognize how their behavior affects everyone around them; spouses usually suffer the most," says Dr. Dosanjh. "Having different perspectives offers a better understanding so that we can develop the best treatment options. While the patients are the ones experiencing pain, they're not the only ones suffering. Successful treatment involves a team effort and support network to return patients to renewed health and quality of life." In Harmony Pediatric Therapy By Michelle Martin For the many children with special needs and developmental delays in Cherokee County and surrounding areas, In Harmony Pediatric Therapy in Canton provides a safe, fun, professional environment that combines learning and play. "Our goal is to work 'in harmony' with parents as they navigate with their children through the world of 'special needs,'" says Kristi Estes, co-owner of In Harmony Pediatric Therapy. "We feel it's important to reach children where they are to help them develop the skills they need, so we provide an interdisciplinary approach of proven therapy techniques using a variety of fun learning tools." Kristi Estes, an occupational therapist, and Jennifer Puckett, a music therapist, came together in 2008 to open In Harmony. "We both live in Canton, so it was important for us to help our local community," Puckett says. "As our own home-based therapy clientele grew, we recognized the need for a designated center that incorporated all different types of therapy to address children's special needs and developmental delays." In Harmony Pediatric Therapy grew quickly, and in 2011 expanded to an 8,000-square-foot facility. Along with Estes and Puckett, In Harmony now includes 24 licensed, experienced therapists who provide Speech-Language Therapy, Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, and Music Therapy for children from birth through adolescence. Estes and Puckett designed the new space with children and parents in mind. The large facility features wide hallways that can accommodate wheelchairs, a calming color scheme, and LED lights in therapy rooms, as opposed to fluorescent lights, which can cause seizures or negatively affect children. A large track encircling the space also allows children to work on gross motor skills using adaptive bikes, scooter boards, etc. Observation windows allow parents to observe their children's therapy sessions. In addition, the therapy areas include two sensory gyms for Occupational Therapy, a Physical Therapy gym, a fine motor room to work on handwriting and computer skills, five Music Therapy rooms, four Speech-Language Therapy rooms, a large room for music classes and group activities, and an evaluation room. In Harmony's interdisciplinary, research-based therapy programs use innovative techniques and tools to address such issues as Autism, Cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, torticollis, ADHD, fine and gross motor delays, speech and language disorders, auditory processing disorders, and feeding difficulties, among others. "Our goal is to help children build the skills they need to move out of the clinical environment and into society," Estes says. "We're here not only to provide clinical therapy for children, but also to support their parents and serve as a source of comfort and understanding." Adds Puckett, "It's important to remember that whatever the diagnosis, it doesn't define these children. We work together with parents to understand how their children learn, and adapt our techniques to fit their needs." As Estes and Puckett explain, Occupational Therapy focuses on sensory integration; fine motor skills and strengthening; coordinating both sides of the body together; adaptive skills, such as feeding and dressing; and visual perceptual and visual motor skills. Physical Therapy addresses gross motor movement limitations through activities designed to strengthen muscles, gain range of motion, and improve balance and coordination. Speech-Language Therapy helps children learn how to communicate effectively with words, signs, facial expressions or gestures. Speech-Language Therapy also works on articulation, feeding issues, and assistive technology to aid in communication. Music Therapy addresses fine and gross motor skills, communication skills, adaptive skills, social and emotional development skills, and cognitive skills. Individual and group classes help children through music improvisation, receptive music listening, song writing, lyric discussion, music and imagery, music performance, and learning through music. In each of the therapy areas, In Harmony can incorporate adapted equipment to meet children's individual needs if they are unable to crawl, walk, sit, or speak on their own. Therapy programs are customized according to children's individual needs, based either on a doctor's prescribed therapy or the licensed therapist's own evaluation. Most therapy sessions last 30 minutes to an hour, one to two times a week. Estes explains that some children may just need short-term therapy to help them better articulate their "R's," for example, while others may require extensive therapy to address critical developmental delays and long-term special needs. In Harmony therapists evaluate children's progress over time and meet regularly with parents to discuss their children's therapy goals, progress, and recommendations if modifications or extended therapy sessions are needed. "We believe in an open-door policy that encourages parents to ask questions," Estes says. "We want parents to be a part of their children's therapy so that we can provide the best treatment possible. "When kids come to In Harmony, they don't know they're coming to therapy; they just know that it's fun," Estes continues. "In Harmony Pediatric Therapy is like a big indoor playground for them but they're really building important developmental skills here." Puckett adds, "It's so rewarding to see the change in children here. The more they learn, the more confident they are to try new things in therapy and in everyday life." 4280 Hickory Flat Hwy., Suite 108, Canton770-345-2804InHarmonyPediatricTherapy.comThis email address is being protected from spambots. Book Review: 'Tony the Kneebreaker' Novella by Woodstock resident Ed Gruber captures the tough life of the New York City docks. By Catherine Groves In Woodstock (Ga.) resident Ed Grubers novella, Tony the Kneebreaker, we meet the Lowenstein brothers: Joey, Freddie, and Ira. For more years than anyone can remember, they have been the owners and operators of JIF Banana Trucking. One of their nearest and dearest friends, Tony, comes to them for help, and the brothers find themselves in a quandary. For 20 years, Tony has represented The Boys on the docks of the Hudson River. He has beaten up welchers and many other problem customers for years; it is the only career hes ever had. He is paid, and paid well, to change the minds of business owners who miss their payments. He has seen too much and knows too much; he wants out. Hes found God in a new way, he is tired of lying to his wife, and his conscious is at war knowing hes lying to his son. The streets surrounding the New York Harbor are home to The Boys and the Lowensteins, and Joeys chance meeting with the Boss at the tender age of 14 started a relationship that has lasted for decades. Although Joey and his brothers decided long ago to run a clean business, there is still an unavoidable involvement with The Boys. As one brother states, We pay them to protect us against them. So, when Tony reaches out to them for help, they know they are walking a fine line. The Boys, feeling they are offering a viable option to Tony that would assure his silence and loyalty forever, also involve the Lowenstein brothers by putting them in a potential lifetime of doing the type of unethical business theyve always avoided. Tony and the brothers, along with their seductive secretary, come up with a plan but it all falls apart at the seams. Ed Grubers Tony the Kneebreaker hosts fictional characters that were a part of Grubers life growing up on the streets of New York City. The Joy of Serving Others By Michelle Martin As we celebrate this festive holiday season with family and friends, enjoying the traditions of presents, parties, and elaborate dinners, it is important to remember that the holidays may not hold the same joy and blessings of abundance for others. Many families must rely upon community services for assistance with basic necessities not only during the holidays but also throughout the year. Community service organizations could not have nearly the positive impact they do without the generosity of volunteers, like Mary Good of Alpharetta. We hope Mary's story will inspire you to experience firsthand the joy of blessing others through the donation of your time, service and riches. Mary Good, who lives in Alpharetta with her husband, Chris, and their daughter, Mary Elizabeth, 18, has been volunteering in North Fulton Community Charities' (NFCC) food pantry for approximately seven years. Mary's parents instilled in her and her four brothers from a young age the importance of serving in the community a value that Mary has also instilled in her daughter. "Alpharetta is a wonderful place to raise a child, but, with so much affluence in our community, we forget that we have neighbors in need," she says. "We feel it is important that we show Mary Elizabeth by our actions what it is to help others." Mary says working weekly in the food pantry is a humbling experience. "We get to touch and feel their needs as we stock the pantry, sort food, and grocery shop for our families. I went in thinking I was changing our families, but they changed me." Over the years, Mary has helped coordinate various NFCC events and now serves on the NFCC board of directors while continuing her volunteer work in the food pantry. Chris and Mary Elizabeth became involved with NFCC about three years ago, volunteering around their work, school and vacation schedules. "I am blessed that my family has adopted my passion," she says. "After retiring 2 years ago, Chris went to work with me at NFCC that next Monday morning, and every Monday since then!" Even before Mary Elizabeth was old enough to volunteer at NFCC, she made a difference. Mary Elizabeth saw the bare pantry shelves at NFCC and asked how the families were going to eat. "I told her we would do the best we could with what we had," Mary recalls. Immediately, Mary Elizabeth sent out a text blast asking her friends for food donations, and they brought the food to school and loaded it up in Mary's truck during carpool! "If we have a goal as parents, it is to build Mary Elizabeth's servant heart," Mary says. "This young lady doesn't hesitate; she is an example of what Chris and I hope that we show others. We believe we all can make a small effort to impact change."
Joy of Serving Others By Michelle Martin As we celebrate this festive holiday season with family and friends, enjoying the traditions of presents, parties, and elaborate dinners, it is important to remember that the holidays may not hold the same joy and blessings of abundance for others. Many families must rely upon community services for assistance with basic necessities not only during the holidays but also throughout the year. Community service organizations could not have nearly the positive impact they do without the generosity of volunteers, like Jim and Clem Baker of Woodstock. We hope the Bakers' story will inspire you to experience firsthand the joy of blessing others through the donation of your time, service and riches. Jim and Clem Baker, who live in Woodstock, have been volunteering with MUST Ministries for several years. "We wanted to help others while we still can, and wanted to do something ongoing locally," Jim says. He works in the food pantry, while Clem interviews families and individuals to assess their immediate needs. Though their volunteer positions are in different areas, they each enjoy interacting with MUST families. "Interviewing gives me a connection to MUST clients and helps me understand their situation," Clem says. Throughout the years, Jim and Clem have influenced others around them to become involved in volunteer work. Their daughter volunteers with Raintree Children and Family Services, a group home for young girls in New Orleans, where she lives. The Bakers also recruited several of their teenage and adolescent neighbors, including Connor and Alex Smith, to volunteer in the summer lunch and other MUST programs. "Their parents were not sure how the experience would go, but they were already looking forward to going back after that first day," Jim recalls. "Last year, Connor wrote his senior paper about his volunteer work at MUST, describing the benefits that he gained personally by working there." Jim and Clem have seen MUST evolve in recent years to better meet the ever-increasing needs in the community. For example, information about individual and family needs has gone from being filed on simple index cards to being entered into a central database. The new MUST office in Canton now includes cubicles, which Clem says offer more privacy when interviewing families. But, as Jim explains, food distribution has been scaled back from 10 pounds to 8 pounds per family member. "Unfortunately, we've had to adjust the amount of food distributed because food donations have decreased, yet the number of families needing assistance has increased." The Bakers encourage individuals to consider volunteering, whether for the holiday season or throughout the year. "There are many needs for families and especially children during the holiday season," Clem says. "The holiday season reminds us to be thankful for our own blessings, because we see the gratitude of the families who are served through all of the volunteers and staff at MUST Ministries." Jim adds, "Volunteering helps you become connected with your community. We have learned a lot about the needs of the community and realize that we are fortunate to have the resources that we have personally."
Livi Rae Lingerie 'Doctors of lingerie' educate women about breast health. By Michelle Martin Molly Hopkins and Cynthia Decker, co-owners of Livi Rae Lingerie in Kennesaw and stars of the "Double Divas" reality TV show, do more than just help women and young girls find the right fit for custom bras and lingerie. They help transform women's lives and educate them about the importance of proper bra fit for better breast health. "We help women by not only lifting their busts but also lifting their spirits," says Hopkins, who opened the custom-fit lingerie store with Decker in 2006. "When women come here, they are not allowed to use the words 'fat,' 'old,' 'ugly,' or 'used to be.' We believe in helping women as they are one breast at a time!" Hopkins and Decker each have 20 years' experience in fitting and design, but the heart of their work is in one-on-one relationship service that extends beyond bra fitting. "We believe our desire to help women is a gift that was planted in our hearts. This is our life," Decker says. "When the clothes come off, women feel free to open up about everything." Decker adds that their experience also has made them astute observers of breast health issues, including moles, yeast under the bust line, and complications with breast implants. "We're known as the 'doctors of lingerie," she says. "We feel it is our duty to help educate women about breast health and encourage them to consult a medical doctor when we notice anything out of the ordinary." Education about breast health and proper bra fit applies to women of all ages and all bust sizes, as their Livi Rae Lingerie custom t-shirts echo: "No bust too big or too small," and, "Never too young to check yo'self." Hopkins believes many young girls today have formed a certain perception about body image and lingerie based on advertisements and products that promote a sexy look over a proper fit. "Young girls see those ads and buy those types of bras because they think they're sexy, not because they offer the right fit," she says. "If the breast is remotely visible, it's not a 'secret.'" Decker feels Livi Rae Lingerie has a responsibility to educate young girls because middle and high school girls represent a large percentage of their "Double Divas" fan base. "That's why it is important for us to reach girls early and educate them about proper fit and breast health," she says. "We have to change the perception that sexy is normal. What is normal anyway? There is no normal; every individual, every young girl and woman, is unique." In fact, 85 percent of young girls and women are wearing the wrong types of bras and/or ill-fitting bras because they have never had a custom fit. "The average bra size is 34G, but most women would guess it to be 34D," Hopkins says. Improper bra fit can lead to back problems, poor circulation and other health issues. Decker compares the importance of proper bra fit to shoe fit: "With shoes, we know that a bad fit can lead to discomfort and even foot problems if we wear the wrong kinds of shoes and heels over time. The same principle applies to bras and yet every day most women wear bras that don't fit," she says. "Interestingly, department stores are more likely to have a salesperson to offer custom fitting for shoes than they are for bras. Women are wearing the wrong bras because stores don't see the value in providing custom fitting." Hopkins, Decker and the entire Livi Rae Lingerie team are dedicated to helping women find their proper fit. Women from all over the country turn to Livi Rae for custom-fitted bras, lingerie, panties, shapewear, hosiery and accessories for everyday wear, bridal and honeymoon needs, nursing, after weight loss and breast surgery. "We get a lot of customers from New York and California, where you would expect to find boutiques offering similar services," says Decker. "No one else does what we do, like we do." Livi Rae Lingerie customers include Abbie Lee from the reality TV show, "Dance Moms," and Norma Stitz, who holds the Guinness World Record for the largest natural breasts (102ZZZ). Decker, Hopkins and the other Livi Rae fit specialists educate customers about proper fit including shoulder straps, cup size, the center "gore," and underwire and help them choose (or design) the right bra for their individual lifestyle. They recommend having two to three basic bras and one black lace, strapless, sports and sleep bra. Livi Rae Lingerie carries only quality designers known for fit and durability, including Affinitas, Panache, Wacoal and Empreinte, the "Rolls Royce of bras." Once bras have been broken in, Livi Rae Lingerie offers complimentary mending services as well. As an added customer convenience, Livi Rae Lingerie now also offers Virtual Fit. Customers from all over the world can enjoy a custom fitting, through a private Skype session, with one of Livi Rae Lingerie's expert fitters. The session is by appointment only and completely private. "We walk customers through every step of the fitting process, just as if they were in our store," Decker says. "Virtual Fit by Livi Rae Lingerie brings the fitting room to you! It's a revolutionary service in custom fitting." Livi Rae Lingerie does more than just fit women they fix women. Hopkins and Decker are involved in numerous programs and events designed to promote women's breast health, offer financial assistance to breast cancer patients, and campaign against sex trafficking. "We all have a real compassion for women," Hopkins says. "Each one of us has a gift or a story that we can share to make an impact on other women. First Baptist Roswell Ministry combines personal touch, traditional worship and contemporary programs. By Michelle Martin Throughout its 142-year history, First Baptist Roswell (FB-R) has enjoyed a rich tradition in the Roswell community. The church is known for its strong biblical foundation in sharing the Gospel and serving others in Christ's name, combining the personal touch and traditional worship typically found in smaller churches with contemporary programs designed to minister to the spiritual needs of individuals and families across life's different stages. Now, following the retirement of Dr. Ron Bradley, senior pastor for the past 17 years, FB-R prepares to enter a new phase under the leadership of Dr. Kevin Head, Interim Pastor and Minister to Young Families. The church's newly redesigned website and logo featuring liturgical colors blue, for the sky; purple, for God's majesty; red, for the blood of Jesus Christ; teal green, for new birth through baptism in water; and yellow, for the sun and Son illustrate FB-R's "revitalized" commitment to reaching the community for Christ. Dr. Head is excited about the opportunity to usher FB-R into a new chapter that embraces the future while also holding true to the church's history. "I think it is important that our members feel a sense of stability during this time of transition," he says. "As minister to young families for nearly three years and a member of FB-R for six years, I already know and love the staff. I enjoy working with them and with our families." Dr. Head says he looks forward to bringing new ideas to the church without breaking from the traditions that are important to the church's identity, particularly Sunday morning worship services that feature traditional hymns, a traditional choir in traditional choir robes, and a pipe organ, along with a contemporary message. "I am excited to explore ways that I can bring something new and different to our traditional worship experience," he says. "For example, this could be a great opportunity to include lay leaders in parts of worship, such as prayer and reading scripture." Before coming to FB-R in 2008, Dr. Head had served as pastor of four different churches. He and his wife, along with their two children, moved to the East Cobb area in 2007 to start their own faith-based counseling practice together. "Right away, we knew FB-R was the church for us," he says. They quickly became active in Sunday School and different ministry programs, and Dr. Head also served on several committees over the years before joining the FB-R staff part-time in 2012 as minister to young families. One of the most popular programs of the Young Families Ministry is Family University, a special series of workshops designed to help guide young couples and families through marriage, parenting, budgeting and investing, caring for aging parents, and other family issues. "We feel it is important as a church to help young couples and families understand how to approach common issues in life from a Christian perspective, based on biblical teachings," says Dr. Head. FB-R's Young Families' Ministry also offers weekly devotionals. As Dr. Head explains, "These seasonal devotionals offer insight into spiritual disciplines and provide families with an opportunity to interact together as they relate stories in the Bible to their own families. Children and adults are busier than ever and have more distractions than ever, so this helps bring them all together in a focused time of family devotion." The Young Families Ministry also hosts an annual Couples Banquet at the church and Art of Marriage couples' retreat. All of these programs are open to families in the community regardless of their church membership, Dr. Head says. "Our purpose is to serve others within our church family and the local community and provide families a Christian model for addressing the issues that are relevant to them today." Reverend Robert Turnbull has served as FB-R Minister to Students since 2005. "I love this church and our families. It is neat to watch our students grow, both physically and spiritually, over the years." Rev. Turnbull devotes a lot of time to visiting middle and high school students in local schools, attending their sports events and other activities. "It is important for me to get on their own turf and meet them where they are," he says. "When we show a real interest in what is important to them and that we care about them, kids (and their parents) begin to open up and trust and that is the key to a personal relationship." Rev. Turnbull says one of the biggest youth programs at FB-R is the community basketball program, part of an inter-denominational church league that plays at area churches. "It is a very good outreach tool. Just recently a young girl from our basketball team came forward with her mother to join FB-R." The Student Ministry offers weekly Bible Study, Sunday School and other activities, as well as local and international missions. FB-R's Senior Prayer Partners program is a special opportunity to minister to high school seniors. As Rev. Turnbull explains, senior students are paired with a secret adult prayer partner who commits to praying for them and encouraging them throughout their senior year of high school; the secret prayer partners are revealed at the Senior Recognition Banquet in May. "The program is based on the relationship of Paul and Barnabas, and the encouragement that Barnabas offered to Paul in his ministry of spreading the Gospel," he says. "It is moving to hear the seniors reflect on their time at FB-R and also to hear their prayer partners share stories about each student." Rev. Turnbull adds that all of FB-R's youth leaders play an important role in students' lives. "Our youth leaders do an amazing job caring for and connecting with our students. Without them, our Student Ministry would not be successful." FB-R's Children's Ministry is led by Reverend Jessica Asbell. She says that she loves working with children and families, and believes it is important to partner with parents in nurturing children spiritually. "Busy families today need balance, so I try to develop programs and activities that are intentional in bringing families together." In addition to weekly Sunday School, Missions, and Choir programs, FB-R's Children's Ministry also hosts an annual Fall Festival, Vacation Bible School, Daddy-Daughter Dance, Mother-Daughter Tea, and several Parents' Night Out events. They also hold a Family Christmas Eve Service in which children also participate in Communion with special elements of their own (white grape juice and goldfish crackers, instead of the traditional wafer and grape juice). A new activity for 2015 will be a special Prayer Event that will include prayer stations for children and parents to use various objects to help them pray, as well as time for parents to talk about ways that they can pray for their children. "We like to design programs that engage children and relate the Bible in ways that they can understand," Rev. Asbell says. The Children's Ministry also offers parenting resources, such as weekly family devotions that guide parents in connecting their stories with the stories of the Bible; blogs; monthly e-zines; and videos on everything from marriage to parenting to Bible Study from Right Now Media. In addition to the Young Families, Students, and Children's ministries, FB-R also offers special women's, men's, and senior adult programs to minister to individuals throughout life's stages. Last year, they expanded their offerings to include spa manicures and pedicures. Their professional nail technicians were voted "Best Of" in their first year. Now, with the recent move to a larger location at The Centre at BridgeMill on Bells Ferry Road, Clark Salon has expanded to offer a variety of massage therapy, skin care, and makeup artistry services as the new Clark Salon & Spa. "At Clark Salon, we've always been focused on the whole customer," says Keenan. "We've created a positive environment using healthy products to promote positive image and well-being for our clients. Incorporating spa services just seemed like the next step in serving our guests." Keenan has developed Clark Salon & Spa with the best people, products, and services available, including Aveda, Moroccanoil, Schwarzkolpf hair color, and Jane Iredale makeup. Keenan's high standards and commitment to mentoring young stylists ensure Clark Salon & Spa features talented professionals. He offers a 24-week associate program that allows new stylists to train under him and his educators. "Our experienced professionals offer the best in expertise and customer service," Keenan says, noting that most stylists have been with Clark Salon & Spa for 5-10 years. "We care about our customers and are committed to providing individual attention. We take time to listen to our customers and to make them feel special and appreciated. Our customers can trust that they will receive the same quality professional cut and customer service from any of our stylists. When you provide consistent quality and customer service, it's easy to build a loyal clientele." As a longtime beneficiary of massage therapy himself, Keenan recognized the opportunity to incorporate massage therapy and other spa features into Clark Salon & Spa's menu of services providing customers a full-service hair salon and spa experience in one convenient location. "Our philosophy has always been on helping customers feel completely well through healthy products and services," Keenan says. "Massage therapy, as well as skin care and cosmetic services, certainly have a healing, rejuvenating effect." Whereas many local salons only offer massage therapy during certain hours on certain days, Clark Salon & Spa has two professional massage therapists dedicated exclusively to massage services during regular business hours. Licensed massage therapists Mary O'Connor and Rubecca Egleton provide deep tissue, Swedish, reflexology, lymphatic, hot stone, sports, pre-natal, and TMJ massage. Other services include aromatherapy, kinesiology taping, and cupping therapy. Their makeup artists proudly use Jane Iredale cosmetics to provide services for individuals, special occasions, and private parties. Aesthetician Jennifer Mangino offers skin care, including cleansing, acne, and anti-aging facials; masks; microdermabrasion; lip and eye treatments; and face and body waxing. Clark Salon & Spa has already established a positive reputation for gel, natural nail manicures, and pedicures. Nail customers are pleased with the disposable liners used for the spa pedicures, ensuring a sanitary environment. "We already offer the best quality hair care, nail care and customer service," Keenan says, "Now, customers can expect the same expert level of quality and service with our massage therapy and aesthetic services as our hair services." Clark Salon & Spa recently relocated to a larger space, Suite 500 in The Centre at BridgeMill on Bells Ferry Road in Canton, to accommodate both hair and spa services. The newly redesigned Clark Salon & Spa features a warm, inviting atmosphere with rich wood accents, a calming teal blue color scheme, and beautiful chandelier lighting. "We wanted to create a positive, fun atmosphere for customers, while at the same time providing an intimate, peaceful spa setting for our massage and skin care clients," Keenan says. "Our new space and design provide a welcoming, relaxing environment to enhance the salon experience for all of our guests." To celebrate its new expanded services and space, Clark Salon & Spa is planning a special grand opening event free to the public. Book Review: The Magic' The Magic challenges readers to find a magical life through gratitude. By Catherine Groves "The Magic, by Rhonda Byrne, provides a 28-day journey of finding the magic in life and living life more gratefully. For 28 days, readers will participate in a different practice each day. Each practice is designed to make readers more grateful and experience more magical moments in different aspects of life. Before even beginning with Day 1, Byrne provides 28 pages of thought-provoking writing on gratitude and living a magical life. The beginning paragraph, Remember when you were a child and you looked at life in total wonder and awe? Life was magical and exciting, and the smallest things were utterly thrilling to you. You were fascinated by the frost on the grass, a butterfly flittering through the air, or any strange leaf or rock on the ground, grabs a hold quickly, and the magical journey really does begin! There are 28 magical practices designed to change readers negative beliefs and let gratitude create a miracle power that is life changing. This 28-day practice helps remove all of the negative attitudes, some from a very long time ago, and cause a deep transformation. Byrne writes on 28 different topics, all designed to get rid of the negative, focus on the positive, and embrace a spirit of gratitude. Day 1 begins with giving blessings for all, and the simple tasks outlined for doing so at the end of this chapter are reason to look forward to Day 2. From our health, to relationships, and even our professional lives, nothing is left out. As powerful as discovering the Law of Attraction in Action, in Byrnes first book, The Secret, the Miracle Power of Gratitude is just as powerful and life changing in The Magic. Whether it is to find the magic in life by learning the true art of gratitude or maybe just desire for personal growth, The Magic is sure to deliver. The Magic can be purchased at most major bookstores and in e-Reader versions for Kindle and Nook.
Downtown Kitchen & Goin' Coastal Historic Downtown Canton's premier dining destinations celebrate 10 years and new event space serving Cherokee diners. By Michelle Martin The ongoing popularity of reality TV shows searching for the next best chef and cooking magazines targeting self-professed "foodies" can give the impression that dining has become a form of entertainment, changing with current trends. But for Zach Kell and Corey Shupert, co-owners of Downtown Kitchen in historic Downtown Canton, dining has always been about the experience. "Our focus has always been on quality quality ingredients, quality service, and quality atmosphere, with the approach to deliver the best dining experience available anywhere," says Kell, who also owns Goin' Coastal seafood restaurant, located in Downtown Canton. Both Downtown Kitchen and Goin' Coastal in Canton are celebrating milestones this year. In December, Downtown Kitchen will mark its 10th anniversary in historic Downtown Canton. Goin' Coastal, which opened in 2006, recently completed an interior update to now include a remodeled event space and wine bar. Previously occupied by Jill's Cakes & Bakes and used primarily as a storage area for Goin' Coastal, the space's pink walls and worn linoleum floors desperately needed a "facelift," as Kell explains, to transform it from an outdated bakery setup into the sophisticated dining area and wine bar he envisioned for Goin' Coastal. "When we pulled up the linoleum, we found the original hardwood floors approximately 100 years old, from when the building was originally completed underneath," he says. "We were able to resurface and stain them, essentially restoring them to their original beauty. They look great against the new exposed brick walls, which are in keeping with the restaurant's overall style." The remodeled, climate-controlled space also features floor-to-ceiling wine racks and a custom cherry wood wine case that combined can hold 350 bottles of wine. The bar also is custom made from cherry wood. "We're very excited to add a new dimension to the dining experience at Goin' Coastal," Kell says. "The new event space can accommodate up to 40 guests, with full restaurant and bar service for private functions." Kell describes Goin' Coastal as a fresh approach to the finest seafood, sourced locally from American waters. "Our daily fresh fish selections are our top menu choices every day," he says, noting that two of the most popular items Twin Crab Cakes, jumbo lump blue crab cakes served with red pepper butter and corn tomato relish; and Shrimp & Grits, Wild American shrimp prepared either sauted and flashed, or fried and served over creamy cheese grits with andouilee gravy have been on the menu since Goin' Coastal opened in 2006. "We believe a great dining experience starts with quality ingredients. We just let the natural flavors shine," Kell adds. Goin' Coastal is known as much for its wine selection as for its sensational seafood. Kells says many patrons come to Goin' Coastal especially for its wine offerings, which include varieties ranging from $25 up to $400 per bottle. More than 150 wines are featured on the Goin' Coastal wine app, which allows customers to select wines based on price, taste and region. "There is no restaurant outside the perimeter that has a wine selection as extensive as ours at Goin' Coastal," he says. "And our wines are priced approximately 20 percent less than wines available in Atlanta restaurants." Kell, who lives in Canton with his family, selected historic Downtown Canton for Goin' Coastal and Downtown Kitchen because he wanted to offer Cherokee residents a quality dining experience locally. "Canton is a great community with excellent schools and a growing downtown center. We love it here," he says. "But, whenever we wanted to enjoy a nice dinner beyond regular chain restaurants, we were driving to other communities Roswell, Marietta, and Atlanta. I knew there was great potential here in Downtown Canton. Now, people come from Atlanta, outside the perimeter, and even other states to enjoy Goin' Coastal and Downtown Kitchen's unique dining experience. When the food, service and atmosphere are great, at the right price, people will come wherever you are." Corey Shupert joined Downtown Kitchen as general manager in 2009, and has served as co-owner with Kell since 2011. He describes Downtown Kitchen as "American cuisine with a world influence based on quality ingredients. It's simplicity at its finest," Shupert says. "Every day, with every guest, we strive to deliver a quality dining experience based on classic menu items in a comfortable atmosphere. Our goal is the same today as we approach 10 years serving the Canton community as it was when we first opened. We take pride in Downtown Kitchen's reputation and work hard to not only live up to our reputation but also to exceed diners' expectations." Downtown Kitchen offers a variety of classic dinner offerings, including beef, poultry, seafood, and signature cocktails, in a sophisticated, relaxed setting. "We describe Downtown Kitchen as friendly for everyone from professionals to families, book clubs and bridal parties, and everyone in between," Shupert says. "People choose Downtown Kitchen for proposals, special celebrations, or just a nice dinner out with family and friends. Whatever the occasion, we work hard to anticipate our customers' needs and deliver the perfect dining experience." Popular dishes include the 8-ounce Hanger Steak, featuring Downtown Kitchen's signature marinade; Downtown Kitchen's Kitchen Fried Chicken, a boneless chicken breast featuring a buttermilk breading and deep fried with bacon thyme gravy; and the Downtown Kitchen Caprese, an appetizer of Kumato tomatoes with burrata cheese, fresh basil and sundried tomato vinaigrette. Downtown Kitchen also offers live music upstairs on Fridays and Saturdays, beginning at 9:00 p.m. Shupert and Kell are planning a grand celebration for Downtown Kitchen's 10-year anniversary on December 20. Special activities open to the public will include a champagne toast, giveaways, and live music performed by one of Downtown Kitchen's most popular acts, Col. Bruce Hampton & Friends. "We're planning a big party, including a retro menu that will include dishes and drink specials from our original menu 10 years ago," Shupert says. "We will always stay true to our roots and original mission, perfecting techniques along the way so that we continue to evolve and offer Cherokee diners something fresh and exciting." Kell says that approach will continue for both Downtown Kitchen and Goin' Coastal, as each restaurant celebrates a new dimension of dining. "Our restaurants are built on the basic principle of quality. We don't follow trends we try to set the standard. And when you're successful, others will follow. So, we'll continue to do things how we always have...pushing the envelope to get better every day." Goin' Coastal125 W. Wylee by Leighanne Littrell North Fulton resident brings personal style to fashion designs By Michelle Martin Long before launching Wylee fashion designs in 2006, Leighanne Littrell had a love for fashion at an early age often playing "Fashion Show" with her older sister, Suzanne, when they were little girls. "We would dress up in our mother's skirts, put a belt around them, and wear them as dresses. We looked so great and grown up!" Leighanne says. "Even then, I guess we had a knack for taking something we already had and making it into something new, even better, with a simple twist of our own." As the sisters grew older, they parlayed their at-home "Fashion Show" talents into modeling professionally for local department stores. Leighanne's flair for fashion, creativity and ingenuity emerged again when she custom designed her own baby bag for her infant son, Baylee, now 12. With a busy travel schedule supporting her husband's career in the entertainment industry (Brian Littrell, with the Backstreet Boys), Leighanne often found herself dissatisfied with the baby bags available on the market at the time. "Diaper bags weren't as stylish then as they are now. Almost everything for boys had some type of character on it," she says. "I couldn't find anything in a stylish design, durable fabric, and with the function that I needed, especially when flying or traveling with my son something large enough to carry and protect his Boppy pillow for nursing, diapers, bottles, blankets, toys, and my own personal items. Finally, I decided to make my own bag with all the features that I needed." With no sewing experience of any kind, Leighanne started by buying a basic sewing machine, a simple pattern, and some fabric. "I took Shop Class in high school, not Home Economics. I didn't even know how to thread a needle!" she says. "But, our grandmother was a great seamstress who made beautiful clothes and draperies. Maybe there's a little bit of her in me." After tweaking different patterns and trying different fabrics, Leighanne had custom designed several backpacks and cross-body bags that she and her husband used while traveling and at home. "It was important for me that the bags not only look good but also be versatile and made of quality, durable fabric that would last for years," she says, adding that family and friends soon requested their own bags. A clothing designer in Los Angeles also took notice of Leighanne's custom bags and encouraged her to sell them to the public. "I always had that idea in the back of my mind, but I didn't know how I could do it as a busy mom and wife. So, I started with a small production of different bags and sold them through my website, Wylee.com. Everything just grew from there." Wylee by Leighanne Littrell has expanded to include a variety of bags and totes in versatile styles suited for women and men, along with clothing and accessories for kids, teens and misses. A new line, Wylee B&G, offers unisex-style pants, T-shirts, and turtlenecks that feature classic lines and fabrics that complement both women and men. "I'm very hands-on in every part of the business," Leighanne says. "I wear and carry every piece before it goes into production to make sure the style and fabric will work for consumers. If I don't like something about it, chances are consumers won't either. So, I might cut something out here or add something there whatever it takes to make the piece better." Style, fit, function and value always have been at the heart of every Wylee by Leighanne Littrell design. "I try to keep the price points realistic. There's something for every budget from a $15 scarf to a $1,000 leather-embossed backpack, and lots of great items in between," she says. "It's also important that the items be versatile and durable. I try to choose wearable fabrics that won't wrinkle or require costly dry cleaning. I also like to design pieces that can be worn several different ways and can transition from day to night, casual to dressy, so that consumers get three or four items out of a single piece." Clothing is available in sizes XS-XL, as well as some larger custom orders. In addition, every Wylee by Leighanne Littrell piece is made in the United States. One of the most popular and best-selling items is Wylee's Faux Wrap Dress, available in a variety of solid colors and patterns. While she loves the classic wrap dress, Leighanne says she wanted to put her own twist on it and make it even better. "The classic wrap dress is prone to fly open with a strong wind and the tie can come loose, so it's not always a practical choice. Our Faux Wrap Dress offers the same look in a more wearable style that women literally can just throw on and go. It's a great dress that looks good on different body types; the different patterns are very flattering and forgiving." Other Wylee favorites include the Maja La Playa Dress, which is named for a loyal, longtime customer and features a tank-style top and a flowy skirt; Fabby Pants, which look similar to dressy yoga pants and come in funky retro patterns; sequined shorts; hachi T-shirts; and Wylee's signature backpacks, just to name a few. New fall fashions include a three-quarter-inch-sleeve dress with a cow neck, available in black and three other patterns; a turtleneck dress; and the Shirley Ann Blouse, which features sheer, flowy sleeves and can be worn over a tank top, dress, shorts, or leggings. Leighanne is also excited about the new Wylee B&G line. "We tested the pieces out on women and men to make sure the styles would work for both," Leighanne says. "For example, we took special care in designing the pants pockets so that they won't look 'hippy' on women. Men can wear the longer Wylee B&G shirts with pants or jeans, while women can wear them over leggings or with a belt for a great look." All of Wylee by Leighanne Littrell designs are available on Wylee.com, as well as through the Wylee mobile store a Wylee-wrapped Airstream trailer filled with fabulous Wylee fashions, which usually can be found wherever Leighanne's husband is performing. "We've had great success through our online and mobile stores, and our customers have been instrumental in promoting Wylee just by word of mouth," Leighanne says. "But, now we're ready to take Wylee to the next level." Leighanne's sister, Suzanne Grover, recently joined the Wylee team to market the brand to new opportunities. "I am so proud of what Leighanne has done with Wylee," she says. "I am excited to be a part of Wylee and to help it to expand into new areas. Growing up, we always said that Leighanne is the spark and I am the flame. Now it's time for Wylee to blow up!" Suzanne says she hopes to bring Wylee into retailers, boutiques, and area pop-up stores for the holiday season. "It's easy to sell something when you believe in it. I've been wearing Wylee designs for years." Suzanne, Leighanne, and their families live in the North Fulton area and support a number of charitable organizations, so naturally their expansion efforts include promoting the Wylee brand locally. "It would be fantastic to make Wylee more known throughout our own community and to see more people wearing Wylee," says Leighanne. "We are incredibly blessed and find so much inspiration from everyone around us. It is important for us to try to be an inspiration to others as well and to give back." Milan Eye Center Providing state-of-the-art technology and personal care to patients locally By Michelle Martin Milan Eye Center is led by Dr. Milan Patel; Vishal Patel, O.D., who specializes in glaucoma, diabetic eye conditions and Lasik consultations; Kiran Sajja, M.D., oculoplastics surgeon; and Anjum Cheema, M.D., glaucoma and cataract surgeon. Some of the more common conditions treated at Milan Eye Center include cataracts, glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and dry eye. According to Dr. Milan Patel, Milan Eye Center is regarded by patients and eye surgeons as a leader in cataract care. "Cataract surgery by far and away is our specialty. The doctors at Milan Eye Center have performed more than 10,000 cataract surgeries combined," he says. Cataracts affect approximately 60 percent of people age 60 and older, yet, Dr. Patel says, most people don't understand what a cataract is. "The common misconception is that a cataract is a growth on the eye that affects vision, but actually it is a condition, commonly caused by aging, that clouds the lens of the eye and produces a yellow-brown discoloration that creates a halo effect around objects." Patients with cataracts often experience difficulty in driving, reading, recognizing faces, distinguishing color contrasts, and coping with glare from bright lights. Cataracts can slowly lead to slowly progressive vision loss if left untreated. As a leader in cataract care, Milan Eye Center stays current on the latest advancements in treatment and procedure. Dr. Patel notes that Milan Eye Center was the first practice in the entire country to use the Femto blade-free technology designed by Zeimer Ophthalmic Systems for cataract surgery. The Femto LDV Z6 laser offers a customized alternative with more accuracy in terms of depth of incisions and the architectural design of each incision versus traditional cataract surgery. The laser technology can be programmed to perform precise custom incisions, which are planned by surgeons based off on topographic scans of individual patients. "Milan Eye Center is proud to be the first to bring this groundbreaking technology to our patients. Surgeons from across the nation come to Milan Eye Center to learn how to use the Femto LDV Z6 laser," he says. "This new technology allows us to offer patients a range of procedure options designed to try and maximize safety and meet their individual needs. We want Milan Eye Center to be the best eye care center in the state, and that includes offering state-of-the-art technologies like laser cataract surgery to better serve our patients." Milan Eye Center also offers "live streaming" and digital recording of cataract surgeries so that family members can watch patients' surgery as it happens and patients can watch and share the recording afterward. "This service is reassuring to patients and their family because it demonstrates our confidence in our expertise and safety. It takes our quality of care to the next level for all to see firsthand," says Dr. Patel. Prior to surgery or other recommended treatment, Milan Eye Center offers a variety of tools and resources to give patients a better understanding of cataracts and other eye conditions. Many diagnostic procedures using an optical camera can be viewed by patients on a second monitor, so that doctors can point out and explain what they find and how the problem can best be treated. Diagnostic images are uploaded to a central file-sharing program so that doctors can access them from any location. Also, Milan Eye Center designed the MyLaserCataractProcedure.com website as an informative resource for cataract patients. The website gives an overview of cataracts and treatment options, as well as videos explaining what to expect before, during and after laser cataract surgery. Milan Eye Center also developed the new Easy Drops app, available (on Apple and coming soon to Android devices) for free to patients. As Dr. Patel explains, the Easy Drops app makes it easier for patients to manage their course of drop therapy. "Some procedures call for several different kinds of drops during different times of the day; it can be confusing trying to keep track of them all," he says. "We tried to look at it from our patients' perspective and design an app that would make it easier for them." Patients simply enter their procedure date for an outline of their daily prescribed eye-drop regimen. The app makes it possible for patients and doctors alike to monitor compliance to ensure patients' eye health before and after treatment. It also includes informative videos, office information and an option to email the doctors. Dr. Patel says eye doctors anywhere can subscribe to the Easy Drops app service and customize it to their practice and patients. Milan Eye Center is affiliated with and provides on-call emergency care at Northside Hospital in Canton and Forsyth, as well as Emory Johns Creek Hospital. "Being affiliated with such reputable hospital networks makes it easy for us to do what we do. We are glad that we can offer on-call support and local convenience to their patients, as well as our own. The entire staff at Milan Eye Center works together to provide personal care with a positive attitude for a seamless patient experience, from beginning to end. We hope that our personal approach to patient care, combined with our highly trained doctors and state-of-the-art technology, leaves patients of Milan Eye Center feeling they have received the best care of any doctors in any specialty anywhere." Book Review: The Best of Me' A story of the power of a first love By Catherine Groves In Nicholas Sparks 2011 novel, The Best of Me, we meet Amanda Collier and Dawson Cole, and are carried along their emotional journey as they spend 25 years apart. As teens, they fell in love, thus exposing the complexities of two classes of people trying to hold on to young, desperate love. Amandas convictions held strong, willing to turn her back on college, her parents, and anyone or anything that stood in her way of being with Dawson. Dawsons love ran perhaps even deeper; he wouldnt let her choose him. Twenty-five years later, Amanda and Dawson return home to North Carolina after being summoned by the deathbed wish of their mutual friend and mentor. Both Dawson and Amanda are faced with the realization that the love they had all of those years ago remains as strong as it was in the beginning. Amanda must confront the realities of her tumultuous present-day world: an alcoholic husband, raging grief after the death of her child, and her mother, whose approval she still seeks. And, upon seeing Amanda again, Dawson confirms the truth he has known all of these yearshis love for her hasnt faded over time. Neither Dawson nor Amanda has lived the kind of life they had imagined they would; instead, they have spent the past 25 years apart, filled with regret for how things ended between them so long ago. In true Sparks fashion, Dawson and Amanda must face their fears, meet the past head on, and make challenging choices of the heart. The Best of Me demands an entry way for emotions and leaves readers with a thought-provoking ending. The Best of Me can be purchased at most major bookstores and in e-Reader versions for Kindle and Nook. It has been adapted into a motion picture, coming to theatres nationwide this fall.
