Sequoyah High School names Allen Carden as new Boys Basketball Head Coach Sequoyah High School has named Allen Carden as its next Head Boys Basketball Coach. Coach Carden, a NCCAA All-American First Team member and whose 30-year head coaching record includes multiple State Tournament berths, was selected from a pool of more than 50 applicants who applied for the position. Principal Elliott Berman said Coach Carden was the best choice for more than his experience, knowledge of the game and his winning record. Coach Carden was also selected because of his values, his maturity, his ability to motivate student-athletes and develop their athletic skills, his ability to build positive relationships and his commitment to support SHSs entire athletic program, said Principal Berman, who added that Coach Berman will teach physical education classes. Sequoyah is happy to welcome Coach Carden and his family to the Hickory Flat community. An All-State selection in Football, Basketball and Baseball his Senior year, the Tunnel Hill, Ga. native played college basketball at Tennessee Temple University. During his college career, Coach Carden and his teammates amassed a 112-24 record and won a National Championship. Coach Carden began his coaching career at the collegiate level and went on to great success on the high school level, with multiple State Tournament appearances in Florida including a 2009 State Runner-up finish, with a record of 30-4, for the Clearwater (Fla.) High School boys basketball team. He led Lassiter Highs team to a 69-44 record and two State Tournament berths, and, most recently, has served as the Sprayberry High School Head Girls Basketball Coach for the past two seasons He and his wife, Tammy, have four children, all of whom are involved in basketball. His eldest sons, Cam and Cory, are both former collegiate basketball players who are now high school basketball coaches. His son, Cody, is currently playing at Webber International University, and his daughter, Colby, is a high school basketball player.
Cherokee County Superintendent of Schools named in Atlanta Business Chronicles Whos Who in Education Cherokee County Superintendent of Schools Dr. Brian V. Hightower has been named to the Atlanta Business Chronicles Whos Who in Education. The Chronicles list features the 100 most influential education leaders in metro Atlanta from all levels of the field, including universities, as well as both elected and appointed officials. The profile on Dr. Hightower notes his appointment as Superintendent of Schools in February following 30 years of experience as an educator, rising from a classroom teacher to a school administrator and then a District administrator. It also details his bachelors, masters and doctorate degrees and notes his leadership roles including current chairman of the Cherokee YMCA annual campaign and current term on the Cherokee County Chamber of Commerces Board of Directors.
Liberty Elementary School is the latest CCSD school to launch the #BeKind initiative! Liberty ES joins Hickory Flat ES, Sixes ES, Clark Creek ES STEM Academy and E.T. Booth MS in the grassroots effort inspiring students and teachers to create a culture of kindness at their schools. Hickory Flat ES PTA was selected as a National PTA School of Excellence last year after launching the #BeKind initiative in their school and community. The Beta Club at Sixes ES recently traveled to Canton ES STEM Academy to read with kindergartners and present them with books as part of the #BeKind program at Sixes ES, which began earlier this school year. Dean Rusk Middle School eighth-grader recognized as the Zone Winner for the Optimist Club Oratorical Contest Dean Rusk Middle School eighth-grader Jace Nichols was recently recognized as the Zone Winner for the Optimist Club Oratorical Contest. The 2015-16 theme for the contest was "How My Best Brings Out the Best in Others." Towne Lake Optimist Club members Charlice Byrd and Julianne Rivera visited Dean Rusk MS on May 12 to present Jace with his plaque and a copy of the Optimist Creed. Superintendent of Schools Dr. Brian V. Hightower attended the presentation to offer Jace his congratulations for the achievement.
CCSD High School Choral Students Perform at NYC Cathedral Students representing all six of the Cherokee County School Districts high school choruses performed in New York City during Spring Break. Choral Directors Allison Baccala, Brad Ellis, William Hall, Josh Markham, Scott Martin and Ryan McKendrick coordinated the historic trip, which required months of planning and practice leading up to the performance at the Cathedral of Saint John the Divine. More than 340 students participated in the performance. Students also participated in other special activities, such as a workshop with Broadway musical theatre performers, and students from Etowah and Woodstock High Schools sang during a Sunday morning service at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church.
Six CCSD High School Seniors Recognized as 2016 Georgia Scholars Through the Georgia Scholar program, the Georgia Department of Education identifies and honors high school seniors who have achieved excellence in all phases of school and community life, including carrying exemplary course loads and excelling in all courses, successfully participating in inter-scholastic and extra-curricular activities. Only 151 graduating seniors from schools across Georgia will receive the honor, which includes a seal for his or her diploma. The CCSD honorees are: from Cherokee HS, Jessica Wenclawiak; from Creekview HS, Alex Francoletti, Alyssa Powell and David Wang; from Etowah HS, Madeline Gilmer; and from River Ridge HS, Laura Triana.
Sequoyah HS Students Compete in International Competition Sequoyahs DECA Club was recognized as the 17th largest chapter in the state, and students won the right to attend and compete at the international level in the organizations competitive events and leadership academies. DECAs industry validated competitive events are aligned with National Curriculum Standards in the career clusters of marketing, business management and administration, finance, and hospitality and tourism. As top-scoring participants, Sequoyah DECA participants recently represented the state association at the International Career Development Conference in Nashville.
Creekland MS Academic Bowl Team Qualifies for National Competition The team competed against 15 other schools at the United States Academic Bee & Bowl tournament held in Johns Creek. Creeklands team of four sixth-graders went undefeated for the day, placed first and secured a spot for the United States Academic Bee & Bowl Championship Tournament from May 20-22 in Arlington, Va. Additionally, Justin Bolsen, the teams captain, competed in an individual competition and placed first among the 30 students in the tournament.
Sixes ES Raises Funds for Humane Society Sixes Elementary School recently held a Care for Animals Hat Day fundraiser! For a donation of $1 or more benefitting the Humane Society, a student could wear a hat of his or her choice. More than $500 was raised to help animals in need!
Knox ES Receives Donation from Northside Hospital-Cherokee Knox Elementary School recently received a $1,000 donation from Northside Hospital-Cherokee. The donation will help defray costs for the school nurses clinics medical supplies and equipment. We value our relationship with Northside Hospital-Cherokee and look forward to a long partnership, said Principal Tammy Sandell.
