Seven CCSD High School Seniors Named National Merit Scholarship Semi-Finalists Seven Cherokee County School District high school seniors were named 2017 National Merit Scholarship semi-finalists! They are: Creekview HSs Jack Pace, River Ridge HSs Anabelle Paulino, Sequoyah HSs Katie Bates and Alex Morrison and Woodstock HSs Alex Andon, A.J. Cox and Evan Vines. The National Merit Scholarship Corporation has named 16,000 semi-finalists, who were selected based on outstanding 2015 PSAT scores. Less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors are named semi-finalists. To be considered as a finalist, the students next will submit a detailed application, noting their academic achievements, participation in school and community activities, demonstrated leadership abilities, employment and honors. An endorsement and recommendation from a high school official and an essay are also required, and students must earn SAT scores that confirm their PSAT performance. The anticipated 15,000 finalists will compete for 7,500 scholarships worth about $33 million, which will be awarded in the spring.
Hasty Elementary Receives Grant from the Laurel Canyon Optimist Club The Laurel Canyon Optimist Club, located in the Soleil Community in Canton, recently awarded a $1,000 grant to Hasty Elementary School. The grant will enable the kindergarten classes to participate in a Farm to School Program promoted by the Cherokee County Farm Bureau. This program provides opportunities to promote agricultural activities in local schools.
CCSD Names 2016-17 Student Advisor, Student Delegates to School Board The Cherokee County School Board has included a student advisor position on its board since 1999, and for the past six years, a student delegate from each high school has also been selected. These students serve for one year to give input and feedback to the School Board; the advisor role is rotated among the countys high schools. This years student advisor is Joseph Henderson of ACE Academy. The Student Delegates are: Cherokee High Schools Julia Kochansky, Creekview High Schools Parker Quarles, Etowah High Schools Meghan Hines, River Ridge High Schools Jordan Mason, Sequoyah High Schools Isabelle Riddle and Woodstock High Schools Kayla Brader. Students selected to serve as student advisor or student delegates share common traits. They excel in the classroom, often ranking in the top ten percent of their class and earning titles like valedictorian; they are involved in their school, often participating in numerous clubs, sports and organizations, and they seek out opportunities to serve and lead.
Teacher Wins International Entrepreneurship Education Award Sequoyah High School marketing teacher Kari Palmer was honored at this summers 29th Annual International Entrepreneurship Institute with the Dr. Paul DeLargy Angel Award. The award is the highest honor the Institute bestows, and it recognizes the educator who develops entrepreneurship education best practices along with implementation plans that have the greatest potential for social impact and student transformation. The recipient also must exhibit passion for student transformation and capture the very spirit of a social entrepreneurship angel. Ms. Palmer, with CCSD special education teacher Linda VanFossen, developed a plan to increase high school graduation rates by involving more Career Technical Instruction (CTI) students in entrepreneurship career classes and by offering more experiential learning activities. CTI is a program that supports special education students enrolled in Career, Technical and Agricultural Education classes. Only one high school teacher receives this annual award.
Ball Ground ES STEM Academy 5th Graders Take on the Graduation Challenge! Principal Dr. Keith Ingram issued all of the students a spirit T-shirt for the high school they will attend, Creekview HS, with the words Class of 2024 and Grizzlies Graduate! printed on the back. He challenged each of the students to graduate on time in 2024 and asked them to embrace the theme #Encourage and to stick together.
Cherokee County School Districts 2016 Media Specialist of the Year Named Regional Winner Macedonia Elementary School Media Specialist Jennifer Rice was recently named the Regional winner for North Central Georgia by the Georgia Library Media Association and Georgia Association of Instructional Technology! She now will be considered for the statewide Georgia Library Media Specialist of the Year award to be announced in November. Winners are selected based on the following criteria:Leadership role through staff development, committee involvement or professional advocacy Involvement in professional organizations Promotion of information technology utilization and literacy Promotion of reading and literatureInvolving parents and/or the community in the library media program as partners Working collaboratively with the educators in their schoolInnovative techniques used in their library media program Deliberate and ongoing professional development as a learner, which is relevant to media services Ms. Rice and other Regional winners will be recognized at the Georgia Educational Technology Conference this fall, at which the State winner will be named.
24 Sequoyah High School Air Force Junior ROTC Cadets Complete Training at the Citadel The largest AFJROTC Cadet Leadership Course in the U.S. has a week-long program that was attended by 350 JROTC cadets from across the southeast. The course challenges cadets both physically and mentally in order to prepare them for the rigors of leadership when they return to their respective units. It incorporates a very demanding physical fitness program and numerous other confidence and leader development programs such as obstacle courses, leader challenges, drill competitions, inspections and marksmanship and orienteering training. The Cadet Leadership Course capped off a highly successful year for Sequoyahs AFJROTC program, according to teachers Lt. Col. Ronald Whittle and Chief Master Sergeant John Futral, who lead the schools program. In January, Sequoyahs cadets performed superbly during the Air Forces very thorough triennial inspection earning the highest rating of Exceeds Standards. Their performance during the inspection contributed greatly to the unit being recognized as a Distinguished Unit with Merit for 2016, which is also the highest annual recognition an AFJROTC unit may receive.
Cherokee County School District Launches New Website The Cherokee County School District has launched a new website for students, parents and the community thats designed to be easier to navigate and friendly to mobile devices. As part of the launch, each school has its own new website as well, with a school staff member serving as its webmaster. Cherokee12.nets home page features app-like buttons and an I need help with set of frequently asked questions to make navigation easier for users. Students and parents now can click on these buttons to access popular content such as the Aspen student and parent portal, MyPaymentsPlus cafeteria meal payment system, enrollment and first day forms and student handbooks. Job seekers can click on a link to resources just for them, as can existing CCSD employees.
CCSD Back-to-School Registration and Class Schedule Info The Cherokee County School Districts 2016-17 school year will begin on Monday, August 1. Each schools front office will be open daily beginning Tuesday, July 19. For students who are new to CCSD, parents may register them anytime between 8:00 am and 12:00 pm, beginning on July 19th. Class schedules and teacher assignments will be available at each schools scheduled open house/walk-through event. These events are held the week of July 25th. Four CCSD Class of 2016 Graduating Seniors Win NeoCom Solutions Scholarships The Woodstock-based telecommunication engineering and construction firm annually sponsors a scholarship contest open to Cherokee County residents who are currently or who will be enrolled in a four-year college, university or two-year technical college, community college or trade school. Academic achievement and financial need are considered. The winners of the $1,000 scholarships are: Sarah Jayne Burgess of Cherokee HS, who will study biology with a pre-med concentration at Reinhardt University; Anneliese Conrad of Creekview HS, who will study industrial engineering at Georgia Tech; Madison Evans of Sequoyah HS, who will study chemical engineering at Auburn University; and Peyton Heath of Creekview HS, who will study industrial engineering at Georgia Tech.
