Teasley MSs Jeremy Law is CCSDs Teacher of the Year Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Frank R. Petruzielo, made a surprise presentation to Jeremy Law, praising his service above self and compassion for every child. Law is in his sixth year teaching at Teasley Middle School, where he teaches special education students in resource and general education classes, and at Sequoyah High School, where he coaches football. Knowing that I have the opportunity to make an eternal impact on a kids life thrills me each day, Law said. Its easy to get out of bed each morning knowing that you have the chance to give a child hope through education.

Sequoyah High School Marching Band Wins Award The Band of Chiefs, led by Director of Bands Casey Eubanks, won the Grand Champion Award at the CMI Marching Invitational. The band received all Superior ratings, as well as first-place awards in drum major, color guard, percussion and band categories. The Grand Champion Award is given to the highest-scoring marching band in attendance, regardless of its classification.
3 CCSD Seniors Named Semifinalists in the 2016 National Merit Scholarship Program Matthew S. Wang of River Ridge HS, Mackenzie R. Joy of Sequoyah HS and Paula M. Ruiz of Woodstock HS join academically talented high school seniors from across the country in competing for 7,400 scholarships, worth more than $32 million, which will be awarded in the spring. About 1.5 million juniors in more than 22,000 high schools entered the 2016 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2014 PSAT; the nationwide pool of 16,000 semifinalists, representing less than 1 percent of U.S. high school seniors, includes the highest-scoring entrants in each state. For the next step of the competition, semifinalists submit an application, including their academic record, participation in school and community activities, demonstrated leadership abilities, employment, and honors and awards received, as well as an essay, a recommendation from a high school official and evidence they have earned grades that confirm their outstanding PSAT performance.
Hickory Flat ES PTA: National PTA School of Excellence The National PTA recognized Hickory Flat ES as a 2015-2017 National PTA School of Excellence for its significant progress to welcome and empower families to support student success and school improvements during the course of the 2014-15 school year. The past school years accomplishments that led to this recognition included, but are not limited to: launching the school-wide and community-wide #BeKind initiative, achieving 100% PTA membership, establishing a new PTA Welcoming Committee, and hosting community events, including a new Veterans Day Appreciation Ceremony and a Back to School Picnic.
Charity Roast Raises Over $100k for Boys and Girls Club The 12th Annual Charity Roast, presented by the Malon D. Mimms Company, was a smashing success! It was held at the Northside Hospital-Cherokee Conference Center, and thousands of dollars were raised, benefitting this years worthy charity, the Malon D. Mimms Boys and Girls Club. The guest of honor/roastee was Billy Hayes, CEO of Northside Hospital-Cherokee, who was a very good sport and took the ribbing in stride. The Master of Ceremonies was Jamie Bendall, from the Punchline Comedy Club. Other special guests/roasters included Avery Poe of Avery Poe Physician Recruiting, Dr. Angela Falany of Falany & Hulse Womens Center, Will Hopkins, Dr. Carl C. Capelouto of Georgia Urology and Mia Jackson, comedian. Lively entertainment was provided by Reinhardt Colleges mens acapella group, Men of Hardt. Food and fun was had by all, and all for a great cause!
CCSD Ranks in Top 5 Districts in GA for SAT Scores The Cherokee County School District continues to rank in the top 5 school districts in Georgia for average SAT scores, and earned the highest county average in metro Atlanta! The School Districts Class of 2015 earned an average total score of 1560, which is the fifth-highest score out of 180 school systems in the State of Georgia, according to data released by the College Board. The School Districts Class of 2015 graduates topped the National average by 70 points and the State average by 110 points on the curriculum-based, college entrance and placement exam, which is the most commonly recognized measure of achievement for high school students.
24 Cherokee County Schools Selected for SHAPE Honor Roll Twenty-four Cherokee County School District schools have been named to the Governors SHAPE (Student Health and Physical Education) Honor Roll in recognition of their commitment to the health and well-being of Georgias students through fitness and nutrition. The State named 186 schools statewide to the Honor Roll. CCSD claimed 13% of the total! Northside Hospital-Cherokee Donates Neonatal Incubator to Cherokee HS Cherokee High School healthcare science students are benefitting from a new donation from Northside Hospital-Cherokee. The hospital, a CCSD Partner, has made numerous donations to the schools Career Pathways Healthcare Science program, through which students can earn Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) licenses. The latest donation is a neonatal incubator, which program instructor, Dianne Argonis-Basto, said will be very beneficial in teaching the students, many of whom aspire to pursue additional certification and degrees to become nurses and doctors. We are so fortunate to have a great partner with Northside Hospital-Cherokee, Ms. Argonis-Basto said.
