STEM Night Teasley Middle School hosted a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) night for families recently. Students and parents rotated through a dozen stations focusing on different aspects of STEM, including an inflatable planetarium, robotics, green-screen video production, geology, hydrology, 3D technology lab, 3D printing, and catapults.
Sequoyah Competes in Forensics Tournament The Sequoyah High School Speech and Debate Team recently competed in the 41st Annual Harvard National Forensics Tournament at Harvard University in Boston. Sequoyah HS was represented by 32 students in the Varsity and Junior Varsity Public Forum and Lincoln Douglas debates, Varsity Policy debate, Humorous Interpretation, Original Oratory and Dramatic Interpretation. The team, which is the only one of its kind in the School District, is ranked in the top 10% of high school speech and debate teams nationwide by the National Forensic League. Students who participated in the Harvard event are: Ellie Agler, Caroline Avery, Allie Barone, Cassie Barone, Jack Bishop, Cameron Buice, Rebekah Carnes, Caleb Crayton, Mary Beth Dicks, Maddie Doerr, Sarah Donehoo, Nick Duclos, Luke Etheridge, Gabby Filkins, Caitlin Franchini, Sam Fullerton, Georgine Gibson, Andrew Gollner, Rachel Haas, Chris Harkins, Caroline Kraczon, Derrick Mandoeng, David Miller, Janet Miller, Josh Nieves, Alexa Powell, Wendy Roberts, Zach Rogers, Caitlyn Shirley, Michael Stone, Kalin Valone and Bella Vellino.
Northside CEO Visits Creekview HS The CEO of Northside Hospital-Cherokee recently visited Creekview High School to present a program for its healthcare science program students. CEO Billy Hayes spoke about his role at the hospital and its plans for future growth and improved healthcare in Cherokee County including the recent groundbreaking for the new hospital and the additional services it will provide. Once our new facility is done, we will have 300-500 new jobs jobs you could one day fill, Mr. Hayes told the students. For her Senior Project, Natalie Cain, daughter of Allan and Missy Cain, observed a total hip replacement procedure at the hospital and shadowed the surgeon. It was great to hear from Mr. Hayes about all the surgical advances coming to the new facility
Fire Dept Visits Knox ES Canton Fire Department Fire Marshall Roger Bailey and Sgt. Andy Smith recently visited Knox Elementary School to speak with second-graders about the many responsibilities of a firefighter.
Creekland Hosts Regional PAGE Academic Bowl Six CCSD Middle Schools recently competed at the Regional PAGE Academic Bowl for Middle Grades hosted by Creekland MS. While all the CCSD teams did very well in the competition, which included public and private schools from four counties, Woodstock MS posted the best record and made it to the final crossover round to determine which of the four top teams would be eligible for the State competition. WMS lost in a tough round to Piney Grove MS and finished as a runner-up in the tournament.
CCSD Recognizes Athletic Scholarship Signees Eighty-six Cherokee County School District student-athletes were recently recognized in a ceremony at the Northside Hospital-Cherokee Conference Center in Canton for signing scholarship commitment letters to compete at the college level. It was the largest group of scholarship signees recognized in one event, in the six years the School District has organized the event. Sponsored by Credit Union of Georgia and coordinated by the School Districts Office of School Operations, the students, along with their parents, coaches, athletic directors and principals, were honored at a brunch for making their college choices for a variety of sports on National Signing Day.
Cherokee County Spelling Bee Champ Mill Creek Middle Schools Sathvika Narasimhan correctly spelled lethargy to capture the Cherokee County Spelling Bee title for the third consecutive year. Sathvika, who is in seventh grade, won the county contest last year as a sixth-grader at Mill Creek, and previously as fifth-grader representing Little River Elementary. In 2014, Sathvika was runner-up at the State Spelling Bee. Thirty-one Cherokee County students put their spelling skills to the test in the Cherokee County Association of Educators annual competition. Macedonia ES fifth-grader Julia Barfield won second place, and Freedom MS eighth-grader Sam Rowe came in third.
R.M. Moore ES Wins Grant R.M. Moore Elementary School has won a Fuel Up to Play 60 grant for $3,783. The funds will be used to purchase recess equipment and incentives for students. The Fuel Up to Play program promotes healthy eating and active play for students. The grant application was submitted by the schools cafeteria staff.
Creekland MS Robotics Team Up with NASA Engineer The Creekland Middle School Robotics Team, sponsored by teacher Phil Dodge, recently had the fortunate opportunity to work with former NASA engineer, Karen Albrecht, in preparation for competing in the First Lego League Super Regional Competition in Columbus.
Creekland MS Students Play Math Bingo Creekland Middle Schools held its annual Think Through Math Bingo Games in January with students learning, having fun and winning prizes. More than 440 students were eligible to play after meeting or surpassing their goal using the Think Through Math software program, which assists them in mastering state math standards. Winners of the larger prizes given away during the event include: sixth-grader Parker Merrit, seventh-grader Madeline Appleton and eighth-grader Dakotah Favorite, who each won a TV; Rebeccah Richards, who won a portable stereo; and Dalton Pressley, who won a remote-controlled helicopter toy. The prizes also included gift certificates donated by local stores and restaurants, including Menchies at RiverStone, which sent its mascot to the Bingo Games.
